Jamie Carragher on Spurs: "This Could Be Over Very Quickly" | De Zerbi's Temperament

An Echo of Glory

Show Notes

Jamie Carragher joins us again on An Echo of Glory... and he doesn't hold back.

Four Premier League games, no goals, a 0-0 with Everton at home and £350m spent this summer. So we put it all to Jamie. How long does Roberto De Zerbi get to get his ideas across? Are the "we're not fit, we're not ready" comments genuine or is he buying himself a few more weeks? And why has the energy we saw at the end of last season just... gone?

Jamie's honest about it. He'd have less patience if this was Liverpool spending that money. But he's also clear that we've got no other option, the players we've bought are good players even if we've overpaid, and it will take a few months to bed in.

We also get into:

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium home form. Five wins in thirty. Jamie's words: "it's just madness." Whether two years of getting knocked about has left the squad without the mental strength to play for a big club Six new signings in the Everton XI and why that's still a team getting used to each other The £100m price tag on Tonali and whether it weighs on players Why Jamie thinks Mateus Fernandes has to start in central midfield, not at number ten Van Hecke's performance at the weekend and why he should help us at home The De Zerbi temperament question, including the Tel incident on the pitch, and why Jamie says "this could be over very quickly" Fighting for Europe rather than the Champions League... would you take that?

Then Liverpool. Jamie reckons the Carabao Cup tie at Anfield is now a bigger game for Liverpool than it was a month ago given their start, and he expects Arne Slot to go stronger than he otherwise would have.

Recorded Monday 14 September 2026, the night before the Carabao Cup third round at Anfield.

Let us know in the comments: is Jamie right that we should settle in for a European race rather than a top four push?

Jake R, Jake S and Gary are back for a post match reaction show after Spurs finally got off the mark in the league. Roberto De Zerbi's Tottenham Hotspur welcomed Coventry City to North London on Monday in pursuit of a first Premier League win this season, and collected a 3-1 victory over their newly-promoted visitors. James Maddison gave Spurs their first lead of the season with a brilliant first time finish from the edge of the box. Against his old club too, which made it even sweeter for him. The win moves Spurs out of the bottom three after James Maddison, Omar Marmoush, and Ben Davies scored against Frank Lampard's Cov.
