Summary
Greg Flanagan, a 55-year-old landman, is found dead in his hotel room at the Elegante Hotel in Beaumont, Texas, on September 16, 2010. His wife, Susie, grows concerned when he fails to call her as usual. After coworkers check on him, they discover Greg lying on the floor, with a cigarette still in his hand and the room unusually warm. Initial assessments suggest a natural death, possibly from a heart attack, due to his unhealthy lifestyle.
However, the autopsy reveals severe internal injuries inconsistent with natural causes, prompting the medical examiner to classify the death as a homicide. Detective Scott Apple investigates but finds no evidence of foul play. The case remains cold until Susie hires private investigator Ken Brennan, who uncovers inconsistencies in the crime scene, particularly regarding the air conditioning and a bullet hole in the wall shared with neighboring electricians.
Brennan's investigation leads to the revelation that Greg was accidentally shot by one of the electricians, who had been playing with a gun. The electricians initially believed they were in the clear when no immediate reaction followed the gunshot. Ultimately, one of them confesses, and the shooter is charged with manslaughter, bringing closure to a case that initially appeared to be a tragic accident.
