The Lost English Colony of the Dark Ages

History of the Papacy Podcast

Show Notes

After the Norman Conquest, many Anglo-Saxon nobles, clergy, and warriors refused to submit and instead chose exile, fleeing not just to Scotland and Scandinavia, but all the way to Constantinople and the Eastern Roman Empire. The episode explores the remarkable tradition of around 10,000 English exiles traveling by ship, receiving lands from the emperor, and helping form English communities far from home, even in places remembered as a kind of early “New England” on the Black Sea. Steve Guerra and Patrick Young also trace how these exiles entered imperial service through the Varangian Guard, showing that the fall of Anglo-Saxon England did not mean the end of its people, identity, or Christian inheritance. This Papal Vault episode looks at Meletius of Lycopolis, the Egyptian bishop whose power struggle with Alexandria helped create one of the major administrative problems addressed at the First Council of Nicaea. Steve explains how Meletius’ unauthorized ordinations, hardline position toward lapsed Christians, and accidental connection to Arius turned a local church dispute into a council-level crisis. The episode shows that Nicaea was not only about theology, but also about authority, church order, and the growing overlap between Christian politics and imperial power.
