Separation Is Only in Your Mind: What DMT Taught Him About Connection | Adam Butler

The Life Stylist

Show Notes

In this Lonesome Conversation, Adam and I explore his conviction that separation is a trick of perspective — that whether you zoom in with a microscope or out with a telescope, you're looking at the same unbroken whole, and that "there is God, and we're it." We trace how entomology, the world's religions, and psychedelics converged for him into one felt truth rather than a hopeful idea: that we're never actually alone. A conversation about the kind of existential loneliness that dissolves the moment you stop believing in the boundary.

About Adam Adam Butler is a psychedelic philosopher and passionate DMT psychonaut focusing on mental health, neuroplasticity, self-exploration, and the extreme limits of human potential and ability. Combining an academically trained intellect, empathetic heart, and life-hardening experiences, Adam has found his niche in helping others overcome the fear associated with PTSD, depression, sexual repression, and addiction.

By incorporating psychedelic compounds with deep meditation, lucid dreaming, and tantric practices, he has changed from being an overworked, overweight, stressed-out alcoholic asshole into a balanced, healthy, and sober friend and mentor to many.

Lonesome Conversations Limited Series Lonesome Conversations is a special series from The Life Stylist, built around my new book, A Horse Named Lonesome (out November 17, 2026). Loneliness is something almost everyone goes through, and almost nobody talks about honestly. So I sat down with psychologists, philosophers, trauma therapists, teachers, and friends to find the truth about loneliness, and how we heal from it. Each episode is its own conversation, but together they walk the same ground the book maps out. (Pre-order your copy at ahorsenamedlonesome.com) You'll find new episodes alongside our regular show over the coming months.

In this Lonesome Conversation, Kyle and I explore a hunger most of us don’t know we have — the deep deficit of physical touch in Western culture, where contact gets siloed off into family or romance with nothing in between. He explains how we’re biologically wired for touch as co-regulation, how we convince ourselves we’ve “outgrown” the need, and why you can’t feel the lack until something finally fills it. A reframe of loneliness as, in part, a body starved of the care it was designed to receive. About Kyle Kyle Coursey is the creator of THE RESET, a one-of-a-kind experience. He works with high-performing and high-functioning individuals, founders, and executives who have done the work but still feel something is off. His work focuses on identifying and resolving the underlying distortions in the human system, across nervous system, physiology, psychology, and relational patterns, so clients can return to clarity, performance, and internal stability. Through his immersive RESET sessions, he compresses years of work into a single, focused experience designed to restore coherence and unlock what’s been inaccessible through conventional approaches. I join my brother Kyle Kingsbury for a raw conversation about the life experiences behind my new book, A Horse Named Lonesome. We trace my journey from childhood abuse and addiction to recovery and spiritual awakening, exploring how shame, trauma, and the illusion of separation can keep us disconnected from ourselves and others. We also get into forgiveness, ego death, 5-MeO-DMT, and the hard-earned lessons that ultimately inspired me to share this book with the world.

In this Lonesome Conversation, Dr. Lipton and I explore his striking claim that loneliness runs against a law of biology—that no organism, from an ant to a bee to a human, survives outside its community. He walks through why we've been programmed to feel separate by religion, politics, nationality, and sex, and who actually benefits when we're isolated and disempowered. A bracing reframe of the loneliness epidemic as a spiritual and biological crisis rather than a personal failing. About Dr. Lipton
