More from Fully Scored
We’ve gone old-skool ‘Fully Scored’ in this episode! Jonathan Evans – Principal Euphonium of The International Staff Band – joins Matthew to talk about his life, faith and music. Dr Kenneth Downie had a special birthday earlier this year – he turned 80! To mark this milestone, we invited Ken back to Fully Scored, this time to take us on a journey through his fantastic ‘Princethorpe Variations’.
Have you ever fancied eavesdropping on the three of the world’s greatest trumpet players chatting together about mouthpieces, faith and golf? Well, this is your chance. In today’s special episode, Philip Smith, Philip Cobb and Louis Dowdeswell all get together (for the first time!) and – with the help of Matthew Frost – navigate a wide variety of topics.
Matthew gathers three of his ISB colleagues together to talk all things Staff Band. We learn about the commitment involved in being a Staff Bandsman as well as finding out what goes on when they’re not on stage. The chat approaches the topic of how the Staff Band manages to stay relevant in proclaiming the gospel in the 21st century. We are also privy to behind-the-scenes details of weekends away and rehearsals from the longest-serving Staff Bandsman – Nigel Hills, the youngest Staff Bandsman – Harry Stubbs and the new Staff Bandmaster – Jonathan Evans.
Matthew welcomes a panel of guests from around The Salvation Army world who all have vast experience in leading music groups. Matthew poses some tough questions to Bandmaster Matthew Luhn – USA Eastern Territory; Julia Roper – Worship Arts Team Leader, Australia; and Bandmaster Anthony Thompson – Castleford, UKI Territory.
This special episode features three inspirational role models! Bandmaster Yvonne Ferguson, Composer Dorothy Gates and Territorial Music and Arts Secretary Heather Osmond join guest host Eleanor Hedley to talk about their roles within Salvation Army music. Eleanor asks the panel some challenging questions including some posed by a few of the girls from this year’s Territorial Youth Band Course.
