The Murder of Faith Hedgepeth: The Trial of Miguel Enrique Salguero-Olivares: Day Twelve: The Verdict
Murder SheetSummary
Miguel Enrique Salguero Olivares is found guilty on all counts in the murder case of Faith Hedgepeth, a 19-year-old University of North Carolina student who was brutally raped and murdered in 2012. The verdict comes after a lengthy trial that highlighted the complexities of DNA evidence and the emotional toll on Hedgepeth's family. Salguero Olivares was arrested in 2021 following advances in investigative genetic genealogy, which linked him to the crime scene.
During the trial, the prosecution presented compelling evidence, while the defense struggled to provide a plausible alternative explanation for the DNA found at the scene. The jury deliberated for a little over six hours before reaching a unanimous verdict, which included convictions for first-degree murder, first-degree rape, and first-degree sexual offense. Following the verdict, victim impact statements were delivered by Hedgepeth's family, who expressed their grief and forgiveness towards Salguero Olivares, emphasizing the profound loss they experienced.
Judge Keith O. Gregory sentenced Salguero Olivares to life without the possibility of parole, along with additional sentences for the other charges, all to be served consecutively. The case also sheds light on the broader issue of violence against Indigenous women, as Hedgepeth was a member of the Hollywa-Saponi tribe. The discussion around her case aims to raise awareness of the ongoing crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women in the United States.
