WHATS UP W THE MINUTESShow Notes
THIS TIME the minute crew get historical with MEGA bringin the crew ALLLLLLLL the way back to his origins with hip-hop to see how familiar these whippersnappers are with the way hip-hop all began. TreDoes tells these rappers to slow down ! His ears simply can't adjust to the speed the music comes out, and that is YALLS problem to solve !! And as per usual, Kosey glazes her favs, with Open Mike Eagle's "We Should Have Made Otherground A Thing" as the subject of choice. Should we give this beautiful thing we call indie rap a proper name and signifier ? Find out this week on WHAT'S UP W THE MINUTESFor the BONUS TOPIC ... the crew gets WRAPPED !! More from WHATS UP W THE MINUTES
THIS TIME : The Minute Crew wanna be the very best like no one ever was , but TREDOES asks whether that is the best way to build up the hip-hop community. Inspired by a conversation by Open Mike Eagle about Lupe Fiasco , the crew questions how the want to be "the best" informs our culture both positive and negative. Next , KOSEY's lame-ass nerd-ass book-reading-ass wants to talk about Stephen E. Henderson's ideas of "Saturation" , a concept that describes the parts of black art that denote blackness. As definitions of blackness continue to expand and contract , shift and solidify, the things we point towards as black do the same, and we aim to figure out how today's expressions contrast with those of the past. Finally, MEGA has a bone to pick with the discussions of Anticon's whiteness, feeling as though a lot of the conversations around how they operated have taken an ahistorical approach. Can whiteness exist within hip-hop without it being critiqued , or does whiteness require proximity to blackness to be taken seriously ? Find out this time on ... WHAT'S UP W THE MINUTES ?!?!?!
THIS TIME : The Minute Crew touch grass joined by OUTSIDE HOUSE alongisde , returning guest , HELENA KAY to discuss how to facilitate the evolution of hip-hop. With so many brilliant emerging rap styles cropping up , we have a duty to preserve the spaces where they are formed , and OUTSIDE HOUSE is giving us the keys to lock in. Before that , though , TREDOES has some old news to tell the masses. Did you know that Ovrkast and Outkast are the same dude ? The same ONE guy. I couldn't believe it either ! And now that one guy is suing himself for stealing his name ?? Just ridiculous , Let's talk about it ! Finally , HELENA KAY asks the age old question : are rap and poetry the same thing ? Nah , prolly not , but why ? And in which cases would it be more reasonable to say it is ? Find out this time on ... THIS TIME : The Minute Crew broadcast after dark alongside Past The Watershed's own writer, poet and friend, HELENA KAY !! After writing an insightful transgender reading of Billy Woods & Kenny Segal's "Maps" , HELENA is here to break down how your own subjective experience being imprinted onto the art affects your enjoyment of it. Afterwards, KOSEY takes on the old-as-hell jazz rap discourse, but expands on it by discussing the jazz rap lineage that has followed since its inception. And finally , TREDOES surveys our beautiful and lovely audience on which hip-hop figures they hate most , constructing a list to discern who truly deserves the hate they receive. Can we finally feel vindicated in our hate ? Will Drake and J.Cole finally be absolved of their sins ? Will most of the responses we get be people who are objectively horrible and not fun to discuss ? Find out this time on ... WHATS UP W THE MINUTES ?!?!?!

The answer is probably a few ways , but sometimes in life we have to settle ! Before that , though , MEGA campaigns to bring back immediacy in hip-hop. Seems like , in the current age , there are far too many layers of mediation between ourselves and the culture at large , and we at WUWTM Inc. plan to put a stop to it. In the spirit of immediacy , KOSEY gives flowers to the Brownsville Ka , whose community interactions exemplified this idea. Is there anything more beautiful than a fan meetup that prioritises face-to-face showcases of love ? How can we honour our legends in a way that keeps the spirit of directness alive ?
