Publisher's Summary: Take a riveting journey through the history of our faith's most vital celebration. The Liturgy of the Eucharist, or Mass, is the center of our liturgy. But the Mass has not been a static, staid practice throughout history. Rather, it has evolved over time to reflect the ever-changing world and Christ's presence in it. Like many thoughtful Catholics, you probably have questions about this powerful celebration. Now, you'll find enlightening answers to your questions in Understanding the History of the Mass. Under the tutelage of Father John Baldovin, SJ, one of America's leading liturgy experts, you'll study how the first Christians celebrated the Mass, why it has changed over time, and what has remained constant. After looking at its scriptural roots, you'll explore how the Mass took form in the earliest centuries of the Church. Then, you'll move through the Roman and Byzantine Masses in the Middle Ages, the Protestant Reformation and the Catholic response, and the ensuing liturgical reform in the Enlightenment. Finally, you'll move into the modern reforms of the Second Vatican Council and what those reforms mean for us today. Along the way, you will find a wealth of insights into wider Church history and the cultural developments that shaped current practices. Each time we celebrate the Mass, we honor Jesus' command to "do this in memory of me." The history of the liturgy is the marvelous story of the Church's obedience to that command.
