A conversation with Ryan Cunningham, CVP @ Microsoft

Microsoft invited me to attend Microsoft Build in Seattle earlier this week, and I had a chance to interview Ryan Cunningham, the CVP of Power Platform Intelligent Apps before quickly rushing to catch my flight.

I sat down with Ryan for a 15-minute conversation to discuss the rise of vibe coding and agents, where their real value lies, and the importance of human oversight and control.

We deal with the weather every day, but have you ever thought about why your weather app only shows you the forecast for the next 10 days? You might not realize it, but it’s a huge problem because this gives us less time to anticipate and adapt to unpredictable weather, which affects agricultural planning that gets food on our tables and disaster relief efforts to keep us safe during severe storms and weathers.I sit down with researchers Lester Mackey (Senior Principal Researcher, Microsoft Research) and Genevieve Flaspohler (Executive Director, Rhiza Research) to talk about their work advancing sub-seasonal weather forecasting with machine learning. We discuss how their probabilistic bias correction (PBC) technique extends reliable forecasts beyond the standard 10-day limit, its first-place finish in ECMWF's AI Weather Quest competition, and its real-world deployment with the Kenya Meteorological Agency to help farmers anticipate critical rainy seasons.
