Cool Worlds

Disk Detectives

Cool Worlds

Summary

Mark Kushner from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center introduces the Disk Detective project, which invites the public to help analyze astronomical data collected from space missions. Participants can view 10-second videos of celestial objects captured in various wavelengths, allowing them to identify potential new planetary systems. The project emphasizes the importance of recognizing clean, bright points of light while avoiding contamination from other objects in the vicinity.

Kushner explains that the data collected through citizen participation will be used to further investigate these sources with other telescopes, enhancing the understanding of the stars and their surrounding environments. The initiative has already engaged over 30,000 users, contributing valuable insights that may align with the upcoming launch of the James Webb Space Telescope, which is expected to explore many of the targets identified by Disk Detective.

We caught up with Prof Sean Carroll at a recent astronomy conference and got his thoughts about time. Time may seem like a fundamental property of the Universe, but actually there's nothing in quantum theory which requires this to be so. Prof Carroll explains how time being merely an illusion, an emergent property rather than a fundamental one, is actually compatible with our best understanding of nature. This is one of two videos we shot with Sean so look out for the second video later in the year!::More about this Video::► Sean Carroll: "From Eternity to Here" book available on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Eternity-Here-Quest-Ultimate-Theory/dp/0452296544► Sean Carroll's blog "Preposterous Universe" at https://www.preposterousuniverse.com/blog/► 229th Meeting of the American Astronomical Society: https://aas.org/meetings/aas229► Background music by Hans Zimmer, Interstellar OST::Playlists For Channel::Latest Cool Worlds Videos ► http://bit.ly/NewCoolWorldsCool Worlds Research ► http://bit.ly/CoolWorldsResearchGuest Videos ► http://bit.ly/CoolWorldsGuestsQ&A Videos ► http://bit.ly/CoolWorldsQAScience of TV/Film ► http://bit.ly/ScienceMovies::Follow us::SUBSCRIBE to the channel http://bit.ly/CoolWorldsSubscribeCool Worlds Lab http://coolworlds.astro.columbia.eduTwitter https://twitter.com/david_kippingInstagram https://www.instagram.com/cool.worldsTHANKS FOR WATCHING!! Lithium demand has been increasing for years thanks to the lithium ion battery. Now, that demand looks set to explode as many nations set new targets for reducing their carbon emissions. Given this, we might well wonder - could we actually run out of the stuff? Join us today as we explore projections for our lithium use and what it all means for the future of our society.Written & presented by Prof David Kipping. Exciting new research from the Cool Worlds Lab has delved into the use of machine learning and artificial neural networks for astronomy. In new work from David Kipping & Chris Lam here at Columbia, we've shown how a machine can predict the presence of extra planets in known planetary systems using just a few pieces of information about the system. Chris Lam gives a neural network 101 and explains our implementation works.::More about this Video::► Kipping & Lam 2016, "Transit Clairvoyance: Enhancing TESS follow-up using artificial neural networks": https://arxiv.org/abs/1611.04904► Tamayo et al. Use code coolworlds at https://incogni.com/coolworlds to get an exclusive 60% off an annual Incogni plan.Intelligent design purports that the Universe was made by a creator - God. One of the arguments often invoked to make this case is that the physical constants of the Universe are (apparently) finely tuned to permit life. But cosmologist Denis Sciama presented a thought-provoking analysis of this line of thought and suggested it might be possible to even test intelligent design. Join us today as we explore this fascinating concept.Written & presented by David Kipping, edited by Jorge Casas→ Support our research: https://www.coolworldslab.com/support→ Get merch: https://crowdmade.com/collections/cool-worlds→ Check out our podcast: www.youtube.com/@CoolWorldsPodcastTHANK-YOU to D.
