Summary
Nate Amos, a Brooklyn-based musician known for his solo project This Is Lorelai and the experimental pop group Water From Your Eyes, shares insights into his creative process and musical journey. Amos discusses the evolution of his songwriting, particularly how his latest album, "The Singer and My Band," was developed while on tour, contrasting it with his previous practice of isolating himself to write. He emphasizes the challenge of creating music on the road, relying on mental sketches of ideas rather than traditional instruments.
Amos reflects on the nature of songwriting, noting that sometimes the "bad" ideas can lead to unexpected creativity. He explains his approach to music production, often using programmed drums and layering sounds, while also incorporating live instruments when possible. The conversation touches on his influences, including his time in the Chicago DIY scene and the impact of various musical genres on his work. Amos also humorously reveals his desire to collaborate with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, envisioning a unique studio experience where he writes the material but allows the band to record it.
Throughout the discussion, Amos highlights the importance of spontaneity in music creation and the balance between structure and experimentation. He expresses a desire for listeners to connect with their own experiences through his music rather than focusing solely on his personal narrative. As he prepares for a tour and the release of his new album, Amos continues to explore the boundaries of his artistic expression.
