Show Notes
There are many songs featuring different royal figures such as kings, queens, princesses, dukes, earls and lords, and ladies. The Royal Guardsmen mined a rich field when they sang about Snoopy, the dog from the famous Peanuts cartoon. Snoopy vs. The Red Baron hit the high spot in the charts in the early sixties. A rare royal is mentioned in Dire Strait’s Sultans of Swing while ABBA’s Dancing Queen and Juice Newton’s Queen Of Hearts draw inspiration from a royal female. Of interest is our own The Easybeats version of an old Chuck Berry song Little Queenie. Teen idol James Darren sings his cynical hit Her Royal Majesty and you will recognise the opening of Gene Chandler’s Duke Of Earl later used in a well known advertising jingle.

Pop songs from the ANTIPODES (Australia and New Zealand) span decades of iconic chart toppers, indie pop gems and alternative rock. This week’s episode includes the four time grammy winner Olivia Newton John with Xanadu, New Zealand’s art pop group Split Enz with their melodic I Hope I Never. Allison McCallum’s Superman and Max Merritt and the Meteors’ Western Union Man are also great artists from across the Tasman. Mental as Anything’s debut song The Nips are Getting Bigger, Kamahl’s The Sounds of Goodbye along with the Go Betweens and Christie Allen serve as Australian representatives.
In this program our podcaster, Penn, takes centre stage and chooses songs they have some connection with. Many songs are associated with Penn growing up and family such as Father And Son, Cats In The Cradle and from his infancy Cradle Of Love. Penn tells stories of sadness and joy and yearning for a simpler time like Mary Hopkin in Those Were The Days.
