What happens when a king surrounds himself with people who tell him exactly what he wants to hear?

In 1 Kings 22, King Ahab faces a choice between comfortable lies and the uncomfortable truth of God’s word and his decision sets the course for his final battle.

In this chapter: Jeremy Gimpel and Ari Abramowitz explore the opening of 1 Kings Chapter 22, the final chapter of the Book of 1 Kings.

Ahab and Yehoshafat prepare for war against Aram at Ramot-Gilead. Yehoshafat insists that they “inquire… of the word of the LORD” before going into battle. Ahab’s 400 prophets unanimously predict victory—but Yehoshafat senses that something is wrong. Ahab reveals his hatred for Michayahu, the one prophet who refuses to simply tell him what he wants to hear. Michayahu delivers a difficult prophecy: Israel will be scattered and Ahab will fall. Ahab attempts to outsmart the prophecy by disguising himself in battle. A seemingly random arrow finds the one vulnerable gap in Ahab’s armor.

The episode asks a question that reaches far beyond Ahab: Do we really want the truth, or do we simply want to be told that we're right?

This powerful chapter of 1 Kings 22 explores spiritual discernment, truth, prophecy, pride, divine providence, and the danger of surrounding ourselves with voices that only affirm what we already believe.

JCAP (the Jerusalem Center for Applied Policy) researches, advances policies and advocates for Jerusalem as Israel's sovereign and indivisible capital- and more. Founder and president Chaim Silberstein speaks with Eve Harow about little known issues that have dangerous ramifications. For example, the Arab population of the city now stands at 40%. How can Jerusalem be reconfigured and built up as to minimize the potential of a ‘democratic’ coup? Erdogan of Turkey, with Qatari complicity, is building a Sunni ring around Israel whose goal is to anoint him as Caliphate of an Empire with Jerusalem at the center. Iran and its proxies remain a major nuclear threat to the West. With France burning, JCAP’s global diplomatic efforts are becoming increasingly critical to educate allies that Israel’s enemies are theirs as well. Their research provides valuable insights into what’s coming next and how to avoid the consequences of inaction.
