Isildur: Hero and Failure | Tolkien's Most Misjudged King Explained

Ranger of the Realms

Show Notes

Who was Isildur, really? History remembers him as the man who failed at Mount Doom, the king who claimed the One Ring and doomed Middle-earth. But Tolkien's writings tell a far richer story. Long before Orodruin, a young Isildur was speared nearly to death stealing a fruit from Nimloth, the White Tree of Numenor, saving the seedling that would become the White Tree of Gondor. On Mount Doom he claimed the Ring as weregild for his slain father Elendil and brother Anarion. In this deep dive we follow Isildur to the Disaster of the Gladden Fields, where a repentant king rode to surrender the Ring before orcs cut him down. Three thousand years later, Aragorn finally renounced what his ancestor could not.🕐 CHAPTERS:0:00 Introduction1:12 The Theft of Nimloth's Fruit3:44 Two Towers, Moon and Sun6:02 The Slope of Orodruin10:26 The Scroll of Isildur14:12 The Disaster of the Gladden Fields21:12 Letter 246, and the Question of Failure25:16 The Thirty-Ninth Heir#lotr #tolkien #ringsofpower #aragorn #silmarillion #gondor📖 Read more: https://rangeroftherealms.com/episodes/isildur-hero-and-failure/📚 MORE FROM RANGER OF THE REALMS:🔹 Channel: https://youtube.com/@RangeroftheRealms🔹 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1cBIiWA4DzPVubntEqH2cr🔹 Website: https://rangeroftherealms.com☕ Support: https://ko-fi.com/rangeroftherealms🎬 A DREAMBYTES PRODUCTIONThe works of J.R.R. Who was Khamûl? Of the Nine Ringwraiths, he is the only one Tolkien ever named, and this deep dive traces that name to Unfinished Tales and the late notes of "The Hunt for the Ring," where he is the Shadow of the East, the Black Easterling, and the Second Chief beneath the Witch-king of Angmar.Khamul was one of six Ring-bearers who were not Númenórean, probably a man of Rhûn. From 2951 of the Third Age he held Dol Guldur in Mirkwood. In September 3018 he rode into the Shire, questioned Gaffer Gamgee, and hunted Frodo to the Bucklebury Ferry, keenest of the Nazgul at sensing the Ring, yet half-blind by day. Where he came from, and whether he led the Nine after the Pelennor Fields, Tolkien never settled.🕐 CHAPTERS:0:00 Khamûl: The Only Nazgûl Tolkien Named1:12 Where Khamûl's Name Comes From in Unfinished Tales5:10 Nine Rings for Mortal Men: Three Númenóreans and Six Others9:51 Black Easterling or Shadow of the East?13:38 Dol Guldur After 2951: A Nazgûl in Mirkwood18:34 The Black Rider at Bag End: September 23, 301823:01 Why Khamûl Could Sense the Ring But Not See in the Sun27:05 The Second Chief After the Witch-king Fell#lotr #tolkien #ringsofpower #tolkienlore #tolkienexplained📖 Read more: https://rangeroftherealms.com/episodes/khamul-the-easterling-the-only-nazgul-tolkien-named/How this episode was made: researched from the primary texts, drafted with AI from my notes and reviewed and edited by me, fact-checked against the books, illustrated with generated art under my direction, narrated in a clone of my own voice. What does Narya, Gandalf's Ring of Fire, actually do? On the bridge in Moria he calls himself a servant of the Secret Fire and wielder of the flame of Anor, and for seventy years readers have assumed one of those fires is the ring hidden under his glove.Narya was forged by Celebrimbor in Eregion and given to Gandalf by Cirdan the Shipwright at the Grey Havens, and Círdan's gift speech promises exactly one thing: relief from weariness and despair. Tolkien names the ring once in all of The Lord of the Rings. This deep dive traces the chain of custody, the Flame Imperishable that Melkor searched the Void for and never found, Arien and the Balrogs, and the shutting-spell at Mazarbul that nearly broke Gandalf.🕐 CHAPTERS:0:00 Narya: The Ring Gandalf Hid for 2,021 Years1:12 Servant or Master? How were the Rings of Power really forged? The ring-verse says three, seven, nine — but that was never the build order. This deep dive walks all nineteen Rings of Power in the order Tolkien built them, from Annatar's arrival at Eregion in 1200, while Gil-galad shut him out of Lindon, through three centuries of lesser rings the Gwaith-i-Mirdain dismissed as practice work.Sixteen Great Rings were made by Elves, for Elves. Celebrimbor forged Narya, Nenya and Vilya last of all, alone, after his teacher had gone. Sauron made exactly one ring, in Orodruin, plain and ungemmed — and his plan died the moment he spoke the words aloud. Ninety-three years later Ost-in-Edhil fell, and three-seven-nine turned out to be an inventory taken in a burned city.🕐 CHAPTERS:0:00 How the Rings of Power Were Really Made1:12 Why Eregion Said Yes and Lindon Said No5:57 Three Hundred Years of Lesser Rings9:45 Who Were the Sixteen Rings Made For?14:38 The Three Rings Were Made Last, Not First18:50 Orodruin, and the Ring With No Gem23:26 Ninety-Three Years, Then Eregion Fell28:21 Why the Ring-Verse Isn't the Build Order#lotr #tolkien #ringsofpower #sauron #silmarillion #middleearth📖 Read more: https://rangeroftherealms.com/episodes/how-the-rings-of-power-were-really-forged-tolkien-explained/📚 MORE FROM RANGER OF THE REALMS:🔹 Channel: https://youtube.com/@RangeroftheRealms🔹 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1cBIiWA4DzPVubntEqH2cr🔹 Website: https://rangeroftherealms.com☕ Support: https://ko-fi.com/rangeroftherealms🎬 A DREAMBYTES PRODUCTIONThe works of J.R.R. Who was Gil-galad's father? Tolkien never decided. This deep dive traces the last High King of the Noldor through four contradictory drafts — Fëanor, Finrod, Fingon, Orodreth — and the thirty-five centuries he actually reigned. He raised Lindon from drowned Beleriand's wreckage, shut his door on Annatar while Celebrimbor and Eregion opened theirs, and wrote to Númenor for eight hundred years asking for help that mostly never came. Then Dagorlad, Orodruin, and the spear Aeglos: Gil-galad and Elendil brought Sauron down, and neither walked away.He left no wife, no heir, no grave, and not one line of dialogue in The Silmarillion — only twelve lines of Sam Gamgee's ballad below Weathertop, and a marsh full of drowned Elvish faces.🕐 CHAPTERS:0:00 Gil-galad: The Last High King of the Noldor1:16 Who Was Gil-galad's Father?5:55 Lindon: The Kingdom Made of Leftovers10:17 The Letter to Tar-Meneldur15:47 The Door That Stayed Shut to Annatar20:38 Aeglos and the Battle of Dagorlad26:14 The End of the Noldorin High Kingship31:02 Sam's Song and the Dead Marshes#lotr #tolkien #ringsofpower #sauron #elrond #silmarillion📖 Read more: https://rangeroftherealms.com/episodes/gil-galad-last-high-king-of-the-noldor/📚 MORE FROM RANGER OF THE REALMS:🔹 Channel: https://youtube.com/@RangeroftheRealms🔹 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1cBIiWA4DzPVubntEqH2cr🔹 Website: https://rangeroftherealms.com☕ Support: https://ko-fi.com/rangeroftherealms🎬 A DREAMBYTES PRODUCTIONThe works of J.R.R. Which battle in Middle-earth was truly the greatest? Tolkien counted nineteen dead hobbits at the Battle of Bywater and wrote down every name — then gave no casualty figure at all for the Pelennor Fields, or for the War of Wrath, the largest battle in the history of Arda. In this deep dive we rank Middle-earth's wars by what Tolkien actually wrote, not by what fans quote. We work through the four-hundred-year Siege of Angband, the Shire's two battles (one of them a golf joke), Azanulbizar and Fornost ranked by what victory bought, the unwritten war in the north where Dain Ironfoot and King Brand die in four sentences of an appendix, and the league table the Elves kept themselves in names like Nirnaeth Arnoediad and Dagor Bragollach.🕐 CHAPTERS:0:00 Ranking Middle-earth's Battles: Bywater to the War of Wrath1:17 Why Tolkien Almost Never Counted His Armies5:38 Nineteen Dead at the Battle of Bywater9:49 Four Hundred Years: The Siege of Angband15:14 Azanulbizar, and What Victory Cost the Dwarves20:03 Dale and Erebor — The War No Chapter Tells24:15 How the Elves Named and Ranked Their Own Wars28:35 The War of Wrath: Largest Battle, Thinnest Tale#lotr #tolkien #ringsofpower #silmarillion #middleearth #tolkienlore📖 Read more: https://rangeroftherealms.com/episodes/every-major-battle-in-middle-earth-ranked-from-skirmish-to-war-of-wrath/How this episode was made: researched from the primary texts, drafted with AI from my notes and reviewed and edited by me, fact-checked against the books, illustrated with generated art under my direction, narrated in a clone of my own voice.
