The Clinical Skill Nobody Teaches You

The New Grad Physio Podcast

Show Notes

All the best clinical skills…

Might help you make the right diagnosis.

But you can perform all the right tests…

But still fail your patient.

Why?

Because knowing what's wrong with someone isn't the same as knowing what to do about it.

In this episode, I share a recent case from my own clinic involving a patient with knee who had been struggling for almost a year.

She'd seen multiple physios and knee specialists.

The diagnosis was never really the problem.

The problem was that nobody had given her a clear plan for what to actually do next.

We all talk about how important communication is…

Yet often its something we don’t do nearly as good as we think we do!

Sometimes the most valuable thing you can give a patient isn't another test, treatment technique or exercise.

It's clarity.

Learn how to do this better in this week’s podcast episode.

Enjoy the show!

Ever had a patient walk into your clinic with an injury you've never seen before… And suddenly felt like an imposter? In this episode, I explore why unfamiliar injuries can knock your confidence as a new grad physio... And more importantly, why falling back on the treatments and rehab exercises you already know doesn't always get the results you're looking for! I use a real-life case study as an example, to highlight the importance of clinical reasoning, about questioning your initial diagnosis, considering differential diagnoses, to help you adapt your rehab when a patient isn't improving. More importantly, I'll explain why you don't have to wait until you've seen an injury for the first time to start learning how to manage it. Enjoy the show! Andy Barker The New Grad Physio Mentor PS. Early in my career I never got this. But one of the biggest improvements in my own practice came when I understood I could have such a bigger impact with my patients... By simply asking better questions. In this episode, you'll discover why “getting out of pain” is rarely the real goal for any patient... And why understanding what they actually want will completely change your assessments, communication and rehab planning. And I'll give you three simple questions you should be asking every patient you see (questions that were not taught at Uni)! Enjoy the show! Andy Barker The New Grad Physio Mentor PS.
