Erin Patterson has lost her bid to overturn her murder convictions, and instead will now serve life without parole. Victoria’s Court of Appeal rejected her challenge to the verdicts, including arguments over the jury’s accommodation and the evidence used against her. However, the prosecutors succeeded in their motion for a tougher sentence, resulting in her 33-year non-parole period being removed. In this episode, Wayne and Caroline examine why Erin Patteson’s appeal failed, and look at what this means for the mushroom killer. The Trial: Australia is part of The Crime Desk. More from The Trial: Australia
A friend of Beau Lamarre-Condon has told the court that the former police officer arrived outside his work and told him he had killed two people, before asking him to help clean up. But in a secretly recorded prison conversation played to the jury, Lamarre-Condon challenged his friend’s account, saying he had misheard him. In this episode, Wayne and Stephen examine the friend’s testimony about the months before and days after Jesse Baird and Luke Davies died, including claims that he watched Lamarre-Condon fire his gun in the Royal National Park, and that he searched for somewhere to dispose of bloody clothes. However, the defence challenged the friend’s memory, credibility and understanding of what happened. The friend denied giving false evidence. Beau Lamarre-Condon has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder and one count of aggravated break and enter. His defence maintains that Jesse and Luke died during separate struggles involving his police-issued gun. The Trial: Australia is part of The Crime Desk. The court has also heard from another of Beau Lamarre-Condon’s friends, who claims she agreed to go on a drive with the former police officer. She said she did not know that they would be gone for hours; or that the bodies of Jesse Baird and Luke Davies were supposedly in the back of the van, as prosecutors have alleged. Beau Lamarre-Condon has pleaded not guilty to two charges of murder and one of aggravated break and enter. Jesse Baird and Luke Davies were missing for over a week. Now, a detective’s emotional testimony reveals how the search for the two men ended at a rural New South Wales property.
Jesse Baird’s housemates thought it was strange when two surfboard bags appeared in their backyard. They didn’t open the bags, and believed the pool of red liquid may have been a mixture of water and rust from the outdoor furniture.
“What would you do if I told you I killed somebody?...Would you help me hide the body?” Those were the words a former friend of Beau Lamarre-Condon claims he said over dinner months before Jesse Baird and Luke Davies were killed. Beau Lamarre-Condon is currently on trial accused of murdering the couple, which he denies. He maintains that both men died during separate struggles involving his police issued gun. In this episode, Wayne and Stephen examine the claims coming from friends of Jesse Baird and Beau Lamarre-Condon, which the jury heard over the last week. They also discuss the disturbing forensic evidence from inside Jesse’s home, including hidden bloodstains and an allegedly covered bullet hole. The Trial: Australia is part of The Crime Desk.
