Reclaiming Agency: Biopsychosocial Health, SMART Goals & Artisan Goods for Community Healing

New Earth Alchemy: Healing & Manifestation Insights

Show Notes

Guest: Rowen X (my 11yo son)

A casual first podcast episode recorded by Savannah and Rowen covering three loosely connected topics: SMART goals as a framework for goal-setting, the biopsychosocial model as a replacement for the biomedical model of medicine, and artisan goods as a pathway toward local community and self-sufficiency. The session was improvisational and served as a learning experience for both hosts on podcast format and preparation.

The "Mutual Mindset & Micro-Goal" 3-Minute Challenge

In this episode, we explore how our thoughts influence our physical capability, how viewing health through a holistic lens restores our agency, and how breaking big intentions down into tiny, actionable steps makes real progress possible. This quick exercise helps you take those concepts off the screen/audio and put them into practice today.

Step 1: The SMART Micro-Goal Check (1 Minute)

Pick one area of your life where you’ve been using a vague intention (e.g., "I need to eat better," "I want to move more," or "I want to support local"). Refine it using the SMART framework into a 1-day micro-goal:Vague Goal: "I need to move my body more." SMART Micro-Goal: "I will take a 10-minute walk outside after lunch today." Step 2: Mental Rehearsal / Mind Imagery (1 Minute)

Before taking action, close your eyes for 60 seconds.Visualize the exact process, not just the outcome. Imagine yourself standing up, tying your shoes, stepping outside, and taking those strides. As discussed in the episode, mental practice activates the neural pathways in your brain, priming your nervous system for the real thing! Step 3: The 1-Thing Local Challenge (1 Minute)

To connect with your local community and push back against disposable culture:Identify one small thing you normally buy mass-produced that you could source locally this week (like bread from a local baker, tea, honey, or hand-made soap).

SMART Goals SMART = Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound Vague goals ("exercise more," "eat better") are ineffective without structure Example refined goal: "Work 45 minutes every day toward doing one pull-up" — breaks a large goal into daily achievable wins that deliver dopamine reinforcement Over-ambitious goals (e.g., 10 pull-ups in a month from zero) risk failure and loss of motivation Savannah noted personal resistance to SMART goals stemmed from not knowing her own goal clearly enough to define it Mind-Body Connection & Biopsychosocial Model Mental imagery study (Dr. Guangyu, Cleveland Clinic): participants who imagined contracting muscles — without physical movement — increased finger strength by 35% and bicep strength by 13.5%; physical exercise group increased by 53% Mechanism: mental practice activates the same motor cortex pathways and sends microelectrical signals to muscles, improving neural efficiency — but does not build muscle mass Biopsychosocial model breaks health into three interconnected components: Bio = body/biology Psycho = mind/mentality Social = relationships, environment, socioeconomic factors

Old biomedical model: body as machine, doctor as mechanic, patient as passive victim Biopsychosocial model restores agency — patient becomes a co-partner in their own health alongside the doctor, environment, and relationships Everything operates as an internal feedback loop: mind feeds body, body feeds mind, environment shapes both Artisan Goods & Local Economy Artisan good: functional or decorative item produced in limited quantities using skilled manual techniques — not automated mass manufacturing; electrical components do not disqualify an item if core creation is handcrafted AI cannot produce artisan goods by definition — craft requires human skill Motivation: push back against cheap, disposable consumer goods (e.g., Temu) in favor of locally made, quality products Traditional skills (baking, blacksmithing, clothes-making, knitting) were once common knowledge — now largely lost Rowen's interests: herbal

We challenge you to take The 5-Second Pause for the next 7 days: Catch the Trigger: When faced with a daily annoyance, stressor, or sudden disruption, catch yourself before reacting. Take 5 Deep Breaths: Inhale deeply through the nose, lengthen your exhale, and visualize "blowing the tension away." Choose Your Response: Respond intentionally from a place of calm rather than an automatic reaction. Share your experience with the mini challenge on social media or in our community!
