Does Mel B's "Hot" Deliver? She Worked With Missy Elliott, Sisqó and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis

CCTV: The Nonstop Pop Show

Show Notes

Mel B's debut solo album "Hot" was released in October 2000 - right before the release of the Spice Girls' "Forever" - and the producer lineup alone should have made it a classic. Missy Elliott, Sisqó, Teddy Riley, Fred Jerkins III, and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis were all collaborators. So why don't we talk about it?In this episode, Chris and Chantel Nicole give their honest track-by-track review of "Hot," breaking down the production, vocals, lyrics, and visuals on every track - from the UK #1 "I Want You Back" featuring Missy Elliott, to Top 5 singles "Tell Me" and "Feels So Good," to the deep cuts that never got their moment. We get into what works, what doesn't, and whether Scary Spice's solo debut holds up 25 years later. The album peaked at #28 on the UK Albums Chart and was certified Silver - but two of its singles cracked the Top 5. Was "Hot" an underrated Y2K R&B gem that got buried, or did the critics have a point? We have thoughts.Join us on Patreon!: https://www.patreon.com/CCTVPOPSFollow us on social media: https://linktr.ee/cctvpops 0:00 - Intro 0:28 - We met Mel B at the Ulta Beauty event for Revive Collagen 1:48 - "Hot" Album Info 3:21 - Album Cover 4:38 - "Feels So Good" 12:50 - "Tell Me" 20:48 - "Hell No" 25:23 - "Lullaby" 32:33 - "Hotter" 36:59 - "Step Inside" 43:07 - "ABC 123" 49:13 - "I Believe" 54:02 - "I Want You Back" feat. Jae Stephens’ “AUDACITY” gets the full CCTV treatment in this honest, track by track album review, with exclusive clips from Jae’s press conference for the album. Chantel was in the room, and you’ll hear Jae herself break down “Attaboy!”, “Sugar Trap” and “Gymnastics” before we weigh in. AUDACITY is Jae Stephens’ debut album on Issa Rae’s RAEDIO and Def Jam, made with longtime producer Dallas Caton and her best friend and co-writer Lita, with MNEK and PinkPantheress also on board. It’s set in Auda City, her fictional nightlife world, and everyone who worked on it had to watch Coyote Ugly as homework. We go through every song: “Crush,” “No One Knows My Name,” “Attaboy!,” “Sugar Trap,” “I Miss The City,” “The Distance,” “Soft Side,” “Downhill,” “B4U,” “Expensive & Difficult” and “Gymnastics.” JaeBaes, did we get it right? This is our honest review of her 2001 major-label debut, made at 17 with producer John Shanks, from the hits to the deep cuts nobody talks about enough. Chris has loved this album since he was a kid and has seen Michelle live on almost every tour. Chantel is coming in fresh and wondering if she likes these songs because they're good or because they were on every WB show she grew up with. We get into the Christian TV channel that wanted "Everywhere" to be about Jesus, the most mildly creepy music videos of 2001, the Buffy and Laguna Beach moments, the 2021 re-recordings, and the brand new "Goodbye to You" with Maren Morris from her “Everywhere and Back Again” EP. Mis-Teeq "Lickin' on Both Sides" turns 25, and Chris and Chantel give the debut a full track-by-track honest review, from the singles you know by heart to the deep cuts. This is the album that fused R&B and UK garage into pop and proved a British girl group could sound like no one else. We go song by song through the standard album, rating production, vocals, visuals, and performances, and finishing with a Cut or Keep. Along the way we untangle why nearly every single exists in three different versions, and dig into the stories behind them: "One Night Stand" as Stargate's first big break years before Rihanna and Beyoncé, the Sunship garage smash "All I Want," the So Solid Crew link on "They'll Never Know," and "Why?", the only Mis-Teeq song featuring original fourth member Zena McNally, who returned to the stage for the group's reunion. Speaking of which, we get into the 25th anniversary Wembley show and the drama that followed once the reunion fell apart. Alesha Dixon, Sabrina Washington, and Su-Elise Nash made a real UK garage classic. Does it still hold up 25 years on? Two lifelong superfans take her from co-writing the Spice Girls catalogue, through the highs and hard times of going solo, to the joy and reinvention of the “Sweat” era. Melanie C opens up about learning to write songs inside the Spice Girls, finding her identity outside Sporty Spice on “Northern Star”, revisiting “Forever”, going fully independent after leaving Virgin for “Beautiful Intentions”, falling in love with dance music and DJing, and why “Sweat” feels like the sweet spot of her whole career. Plus, we hand her our cheeky business-card question (is "Wannabe" one of the Spice Girls' worst songs?) and she defends it herself before naming the Spice and solo deep cuts fans have slept on. And of course, we ask the big one: what will it take to finally get the unreleased track “W.O.M.A.N” released?
