Was Franklin Pierce the Most Dejected President of the United States?

BioGraphics - True Biographies & History's Most Fascinating PeopleThursday, October 29, 2026

Summary

Franklin Pierce, the 14th president of the United States, is often regarded as one of the worst presidents in American history, with his administration preceding the Civil War marked by significant political and personal turmoil. Born in 1804 in New Hampshire, Pierce's early political career included roles in the state legislature and the U.S. Senate, where he gained a reputation for opposing abolitionist movements and advocating for states' rights regarding slavery. His presidency, however, was characterized by a series of failures, including the controversial Kansas-Nebraska Act, which intensified national tensions over slavery.

Pierce's personal life was equally troubled. His marriage to Jane Means Appleton was strained by his alcoholism and her disapproval of his political ambitions. The couple suffered the tragic loss of their children, which deepened their emotional struggles. Jane's mental health deteriorated over time, and she became known as a "shadow" in the White House, often shunning social engagements. Following the death of their son in a train accident just before Pierce's inauguration, the couple's grief overshadowed his presidency, which was marked by increasing isolation and political failure.

Despite winning the presidency with a significant majority, Pierce's administration quickly lost support from both Northern and Southern Democrats due to his staunch pro-slavery stance. His inability to manage the violent conflicts in Kansas and his support for the Fugitive Slave Act alienated many, leading to his party's decision not to nominate him for a second term. After leaving office in 1857, Pierce's later years were spent in relative obscurity, marked by continued alcoholism and a lack of political relevance. He died in 1869, leaving behind a legacy overshadowed by personal tragedy and political failure.

Was Franklin Pierce the Saddest President of the United States?

---

Franklin Pierce, who pronounced his surname as “purse”, is consistently ranked as one of the worst Presidents in American history. His administration, which occurred in the decade preceding the American Civil War, is cited as one in which the causes of that war were exacerbated by the President’s policies. Though a native of New Hampshire, Pierce generated considerable enmity from his fellow New Englanders, largely due to his stand against the abolitionists that demanded an end to slavery. His political skills were unequal to the challenges he faced in office, and his own Democratic Party refused to nominate him to run for a second term, an almost unheard of circumstance in American politics.

His life was one of tragedy and melancholy. His wife’s family disapproved of him. It took eight years of courting before she could be persuaded to marry him. Jane Means Appleton, who eventually became his wife, was deeply religious, hated politics, despised Washington, and opposed the consumption of alcohol to the point she was active in temperance movements in antebellum New England. Pierce, on the other hand, thrived in political and legal maneuvers, drank to excess, and served in several posts in Washington. His views on religion can be surmised by his refusal to take the oath of office as President by swearing on a Bible. He affirmed his oath with his hand on a lawbook.

Franklin Pierce entered the Presidency prone to bouts of depression, his wife having refused to accompany him to Washington. Throughout his four years in office, he drank to excess. His was a gloomy, unhappy White House. He may well have been one of the worst presidents in history. He may also have been the saddest, or at the very least, the unhappiest.
