Conversations With An Economic Hitman with John Perkins

The Shepheard-Walwyn Podcast

Show Notes

In this special episode, Shepheard-Walwyn host Jonathan Brown sits down with John Perkins, a former Economic Hitman and gets the conversation going by breaking down the political system of our generation. The four pillars of that system: fear, debt, scarcity, and divide-and-conquer- show how political messaging can be engineered to keep populations anxious, dependent, and easy to manipulate.John explains how debt can be used as a tool of control, why GDP can be misleading as a measure of prosperity, how patronage and corruption are normalised, and how international arrangements like the Saudi petrodollar system were structured to keep wealth and power flowing in one direction. He argues that real change starts by changing perception, stepping beyond fear, and asking better questions about work, value, and the kind of future we want to build.

In this episode, Jonathan Brown welcomes back Henry Mintzberg to unpack the biggest myths in management and leadership. Drawing on decades of observation and the ideas behind "Bust Those Management Myths", he challenges popular assumptions about what managers do, why leadership gets over-glorified, and how business schools, buzzwords and management fashions can distort the real work of organising people. The discussion also explores why serendipity matters, what remote work can’t fully replace, why AI should be approached with caution rather than hype and how "people disconnect" sits at the centre of so many management failures.

In this special episode, Jonathan Brown sits down with Phil Anderson to revisit the ideas behind The Secret Life of Real Estate and Banking and discuss why 2026 has long been a key date in his forecasting. Phil explains how long-term real estate cycles, commodity cycles, interest rates, and geopolitical conflict can line up to create major turning points in the global economy. Phil also promotes the idea of a Citizen’s Dividend. A system in which the value society creates ultimately flows into land, and if those land earnings were shared more fairly, communities could reduce inequality, stabilise the economy, and even replace many existing taxes.
