Low Carb Down Under

Dr. Ben Bikman - 'GLP-1 Drugs: Consequences and Considerations'

Low Carb Down Under

Summary

Professor Ben Bickman, a biomedical scientist, addresses the rising global issue of metabolic disorders, particularly focusing on insulin resistance and its link to obesity. He explains that insulin resistance is now the most common health disorder worldwide, affecting over half of adults. Bickman highlights the two primary ways the body gains fat: hypertrophy, where fat cells grow larger, and hyperplasia, where the number of fat cells increases. He emphasizes that hypertrophic fat cells become insulin resistant and pro-inflammatory, contributing to a cycle that exacerbates metabolic issues.

Bickman introduces GLP-1 drugs, which have gained attention for their role in managing weight and improving metabolic health. Originally developed as anti-diabetic medications, these drugs mimic the hormone GLP-1, which helps regulate blood glucose levels and suppress appetite. He notes that while these medications can lead to weight loss, they may also result in the loss of lean mass and can cause gastrointestinal side effects that lead many patients to discontinue use. Bickman cautions that the long-term effects of these drugs, particularly at high doses, could potentially diminish their effectiveness and lead to increased insulin resistance.

To improve metabolic health naturally, Bickman advocates for dietary changes, specifically controlling carbohydrate intake and incorporating structured fasting. He suggests that increasing the consumption of natural fats and proteins can enhance the body's production of GLP-1, offering a potential alternative to pharmaceutical interventions. Overall, Bickman calls for a balanced approach to managing weight and metabolic health, emphasizing the importance of understanding the underlying biological mechanisms at play.

Show Notes

Dr. Benjamin Bikman earned his Ph.D. in Bioenergetics and was a postdoctoral fellow with the Duke-National University of Singapore in metabolic disorders. He is currently a professor of pathophysiology and a biomedical scientist at Brigham Young University in Utah. Dr. Bikman's professional focus as a scientist and professor is to better understand chronic modern-day diseases, with a special emphasis on the origins and consequences of obesity and diabetes, with an increasing scrutiny of the pathogenicity of insulin and insulin resistance. He frequently publishes his research in peer-reviewed journals and presents at international science meetings.Dr. Bikman has long been an advocate of a ketogenic diet in light of the considerable evidence supporting its use as a therapy for reversing insulin resistance. His website InsulinIQ.com promotes dietary clarity, healing, and freedom through evidence-based science about insulin resistance. Employing cell-autonomous to whole-body systems, Dr. Bikman's recent efforts have focused on exploring the intimate associations between the metabolic and immune systems. Please consider supporting Low Carb Down Under via Patreon. Dr. David Unwin is GP based in Southport in the United Kingdom. After 25 years of attempting to treat diabetes by conventional methods, Dr. Unwin stumbled upon the website for patients with diabetes – www.diabetes.co.ukFrom this revelation, Dr. Unwin now ignores official advice and treats his patients with a low-carbohydrate diet. Since adopting the approach, his practice now spends £45,000 less each year on drugs for diabetes than is average for his area.Dr. Unwin is the RCGP National Champion for Collaborative Care and Support Planning in Obesity & Diabetes, as well as a Clinical Expert in diabetes. In 2015 he won the North West NHS ‘Innovator of the Year Award’ and in 2016 he won the National NHS 'Innovator of the Year Award' for his work in treating diabetes with a low carbohydrate approach.A .PDF version of the slides used in this presentation is available here; http://denversdietdoctor.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/David-Unwin-The-Glycaemic-Index-Helping-patients-with-Type-2-Diabetes.pdf Learn more about your ad choices. Dr Penny Figtree graduated from the University of Sydney in 1993 with first class honours. With over 20 years in general practice she has now decided to focus on weight loss and diabetes. This decision was made after seeing the power of a low carbohydrate diet to help people lose weight and for some to even reverse diabetes. Dr Figtree had previously tried to help patients using various diets such as low fat diets, Optifast, the 5:2 fast but nothing really worked. In the end she would just say “as long as you are not gaining weight then that’s great”. Then Dr. Figtree read a book called “Always Hungry” By Professor David Ludwig where he explained the INSULIN CARBOHYDRATE MODEL OF OBESITY.Dr. Figtree has now been practising low carb medicine for several years. She describes this as the most rewarding part of her career, stopping medications and patients feeling well. Please consider supporting Low Carb Down Under via Patreon. Dr. Philip Ovadia grew up in New York and holds degrees from Pennsylvania State University and Jefferson Medical College. His extensive medical training includes a General Surgery residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and a Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship at Tufts – New England Medical School. He practiced cardiothoracic surgery in multiple states before founding Ovadia Cardiothoracic Surgery in 2020 and subsequently launching Ovadia Heart Health. After facing his own health challenges as an overweight child and adult—even as a cardiac surgeon—Dr. Ovadia transformed his health by questioning conventional dietary advice and embracing a low-carbohydrate, animal-based diet. This personal journey shed 100 pounds and inspired his mission to educate others on achieving optimal metabolic health without reliance on medication. This presentation has been provided by @LowCarbUSA with generous support from ⁨@keto-mojo7147 and was recorded at the 'Symposium for Metabolic Health - Boca' in January 2024.Please consider supporting Low Carb Down Under via Patreon.
