IVDD in dogs: Be prepared before you need to be | Mark Lowrie
Petgevity: Pet Health and Longevity PodcastShow Notes
The other day, we were contacted by a listener called Davina. She asked us to help raise awareness of a topic that is very close to her heart. Here’s her story, in her own words… Rosie is our Black and Tan Miniature Dachshund, and she means the world to us. As dog trainers, we’ve worked with Dachshunds for years, so we’re very aware of the health challenges that can affect the breed. Even so, nothing prepares you for the moment it happens to your own dog. In October 2024, Rosie underwent surgery for Stage 2 Intervertebral Disc Disease (also known as IVDD, a neurological spinal condition that can cause pain, weakness and paralysis). One day, she was absolutely fine, and the next, she had lost the use of her back legs. It was terrifying. We rushed her to the out-of-hours vet, who immediately referred her back to the Veterinary Specialists in Cambridge. Rosie was taken straight for an MRI and then emergency surgery. The days that followed were incredibly difficult. The reality is that modern veterinary medicine can do incredible things, but those treatments come at a cost. Without being prepared, owners could find themselves facing impossible decisions during what is already one of the most stressful periods of their lives. Today, Rosie continues to make progress, but if there’s one message we’d like people to take away from Rosie’s story, it’s this: Be prepared before you need to be. Today I’m joined by Dr Mark Lowrie. An internationally recognised neurologist and Director of veterinary specialists, Movement Referrals. Together, we’ll discuss what IVDD is, how it’s treated, and the key information every dog owner should know. Getting a dog comes with a lot of questions. What are you going to call them? Where are you going to walk them? Who’s going to give up their spot on the sofa for them? But there’s one question that sparks more debate, division, and confusion than any other: what are you going to feed them? Kibble, wet, fresh, raw? Getting to grips with canine nutrition can feel like stepping onto a minefield. Just scroll through social media, and you’ll be met with thousands of conflicting opinions from countless sources, often influenced by hidden interests and agendas. That’s why I’m joined today by Sally Barker, a Canine Nutritionist and founder of The Good Paw Project. Sally has spent years supporting dogs and their carers across a wide range of feeding approaches and, importantly, has no affiliations with any particular dog food brand or product. Today, we’re going to take an unbiased look, at different types of diets, break down what a healthy meal looks like, and cut through the noise, to give you the confidence, that you’re putting the right stuff, in your dog’s bowl. Whenever I had worries, felt stressed, or simply needed someone to talk to, I always turned to the same place. To someone who was a great listener, who understood me really well, and was always there with unconditional love and support. I’d turn to my stubborn, cantankerous, furry friend, my Lakeland Terrier, Jackson. Now, Jackson wasn’t fluent in English, and to be honest, he was never much of a talker. But somehow, we communicated. We understood each other and shared something that went beyond words: a quiet, intrinsic connection that was unique to us. I’m sure many of you who have dogs will recognise this feeling. Those silent conversations that take place between two different species. I believe that understanding and nurturing this connection can have a profound impact on the wellbeing of both you and your dog. Today, I’m joined by Jade Nicholas, a clinical animal behaviourist and author of Emotional Wellbeing in the Domestic Dog. Together, we’ll explore why humans and dogs have developed such a close bond, how we can better interpret the signals our dogs use to communicate with us, and the practical ways we can strengthen this special relationship. Picture the scene, it’s a summer’s day, and you’re out enjoying a walk with your dog. You’re crossing wide open fields, surrounded by beautiful views, and there's not another person in sight. Then, you turn around, and your heart sinks. Your dog is lying motionless on the floor. Their legs stiff and tongue slack. It’s a terrifying situation, one I hope you never have to face. But the reality is, you can’t be sure that it won’t happen to you. One of the most terrifying parts of a moment like this is the feeling of helplessness, not knowing what’s happening or what you can do to help. But you don’t have to be powerless. With the right knowledge of pet first aid, you can be prepared, stay calm, and give your pet the best possible help when they need it most. Today, I’m joined by Emma Hammett, a qualified nurse, award-winning first aid trainer, and founder of First Aid for Life. Emma’s organisation provides expert resources and specialist training to help pet owners feel confident when it comes to their pets' health and safety. Together, we’ll explore the essential aspects of at-home care and equip you with the practical skills to respond effectively if an emergency strikes. For many years, the complexity and fine details of DNA remained a mystery. That was until the turn of the 21st century, when the human genome was mapped in full for the very first time. Since then, advances in genomics have transformed our understanding of health and disease, opening up amazing possibilities for both you and your pet. Today, I’m joined by Dr Cathryn Mellersh, a leading canine geneticist and Head of the Canine Genetics Centre at the University of Cambridge (https://www.canine-genetics.org.uk/). Together, we’ll explore how genetic testing works, how dogs stand to benefit from it, and why emerging genetic insights could transform canine health worldwide. 2015 was the peak of what is now known as the ‘pug boom’. An era where these distinctive little dogs became a prominent part of popular culture. causing ownership numbers to soar. But behind their adorable appearance lies a troubling reality. The breed’s extreme physical features can leave them vulnerable to a range of serious health problems, including breathing difficulties, eye conditions, and skin issues. The ‘pug boom’ raised serious questions around pedigree breeding, responsible ownership, and how we can protect the health of dogs… not only today, but for generations to come. Today, I’m joined by Dr Sean McCormack, an experienced animal welfare advocate, author, and registered veterinary surgeon, who is head vet at dog food brand Tails. Together, we’ll explore the challenges facing pedigree breeds, the role popular culture plays in shaping our choices, and what we can do to build a healthier future for the dogs we love.
