Summary
Wayne Bennett, coach of the South Sydney Rabbitohs, dismisses rumors linking Roosters star Sam Walker to his team, stating that the Rabbitohs cannot afford the halfback and will not sacrifice players to accommodate him under the salary cap. Despite speculation fueled by Bennett's relationship with the Walker family, he emphasizes that the club remains focused on its current roster. Potential alternatives for Walker's future include a move to North Queensland, where his brother Tyson is gaining recognition, or a swap involving Cowboys co-captain Tom Dearden.
Discussion also revolves around the Roosters' options in light of Walker's uncertain future. Analysts consider whether the team should promote younger players like Toby Rodwell and Hugo or pursue established stars such as Daly Cherry-Evans. The conversation highlights the challenges the Roosters face, including the absence of key players and the need for a strong halfback to compete effectively.
Meanwhile, the Bears are reportedly interested in signing Matt Burton from Canterbury, who has been given permission to explore his market value ahead of free agency. The Bears aim to leverage their marquee salary cap allowance to attract top talent, while the Dragons are also eyeing Burton as they continue to enhance their squad. The ongoing negotiations and potential player movements are set against a backdrop of speculation regarding salary cap increases and the implications for team rosters.
