Listen Dog Training: The Walk & Talk

Show Notes

In this episode, we’re diving into the hidden psychological side of dog training - the part no one really talks about. From imposter syndrome and second-guessing yourself, to emotional overwhelm and decision fatigue, we’re unpacking why training can feel so hard even when you know what to do. More importantly, I’m showing you how to shift out of that stuck, reactive state and into one where you feel clear, calm, and in control, so you can actually show up as the trainer your dog needs. In this episode, you’ll learn:

Why imposter syndrome in dog training is actually a sign of progress - not failure What’s really happening in your brain when you forget what to do How emotional overwhelm directly impacts your timing, consistency, and results The science behind decision fatigue and why it makes training feel exhausting How to reduce in-the-moment pressure with simple pre-planning strategies The power of ‘if-then’ training rules to eliminate hesitation and second-guessing How to regulate your own nervous system to create better outcomes for your dog Practical mindset reframes that actually improve your training performance How to move from reactive, uncertain training… to calm, confident leadership

They're learning all day long… and some of the behaviours they're practising are probably not the ones you intended to teach. In this episode, we're going inside the canine brain to explore how habits actually form, including the role of the basal ganglia, dopamine, reinforcement and repetition. We'll look at why dogs can become really good at behaviours we wish they'd stop doing, and how to use smarter repetition and reinforcement to build the behaviours you actually want. You Will Learn:

Why does your dog completely forget you exist the second they spot a pigeon, squirrel, rabbit or another dog? In this episode, we’re getting properly into the behavioural science behind motivation, dopamine, reinforcement, anticipation and reward prediction, and looking at why certain environmental triggers can become so compelling for dogs. We’ll explore why dopamine is about far more than simply pleasure, how behavioural sequences like chasing and searching can be inherently reinforcing, why your dog’s idea of a high-value reward changes depending on the context, and how the environment is effectively training your dog 24/7. But most importantly, we’ll look at what you can actually DO with this information, and how you can use movement, sniffing, exploration, play, environmental access and your dog’s own individual preferences to become a more relevant and reinforcing part of their world.

In this episode of The Walk & Talk, we’re diving deep into the fascinating world of canine scent: exploring the idea of the umwelt, why your dog’s sensory experience of the world is fundamentally different from yours, what is actually happening when they stop to sniff, and why that seemingly insignificant sniff at the lamppost might be one of the most cognitively rich things they do all day. And then we bring it back to dog training! Because once you understand just how much information your dog can gather through their nose, you might start looking at walks, enrichment, working breeds, busy dogs and even behaviour in a completely different way.
