Who Is Gustavo Varela? Monza’s Portuguese Scoring Sensation

WHO IS GUSTAVO VARELA?

Nima Tavallaey and Carlo Garganese profile Monza’s Portuguese scoring sensation Gustavo Varela following his remarkable start to life in Serie A.

Born in Lisbon in 2005, Varela began his football journey in Portugal before spending six formative years in Greece with PAOK’s academy.

He returned home to join Benfica in 2022, progressing through the youth teams and Benfica B before making his senior debut. A productive loan spell with Gil Vicente then earned the Portugal Under-21 striker a permanent move to Monza.

🇵🇹 WHAT TYPE OF STRIKER IS VARELA?

What are Varela’s principal technical and physical strengths? Why has the young centre-forward adapted to Serie A so quickly?

Nima and Carlo examine his development, goalscoring ability and playing style before asking how high his ceiling could be—and whether senior recognition with Portugal could eventually follow.
