Show Notes
This week Andrew is joined by Webby and Ben to discuss a rapid harvest and last week's brutal drop in market prices. The team question why the market hasn't reflected recent political events, and why spring barley is performing so poorly — with a 65% loss rate and considerable variability in the spec of barley coming into store. Feed wheat prices are looking up though, and Norfolk has finally had some rain. Ben and Andrew also announce an upcoming trip to Scandinavia. They turn their attention to OSR — is it still as profitable as it once was? With planting season approaching, concerns are growing for those with no plants in the ground and crop grants on the line. Food security worries across the UK and Europe also surface. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
More from Dewing Grain Podcast
This week Andrew is joined by Ben and Webby, and things kick off in typical fashion with Ben and Webby taking jabs at each other. Ben also reports that his bike recently had a run-in with a pheasant — the pheasant started it. He then brings up the French freezer cyber-attack before Andrew takes the wheel with some good news — Dewing Grain’s Oct-Dec Pool will be over £200 per tonne. Andrew closes out with his thoughts on the unfair playing field UK farmers continue to face. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
This week Joe and Webby take charge while Andrew is out on the road. They cover the upcoming tender, look ahead to the USDA report due out Friday, and touch on the Australian crop. They close out with the most important news of the week — Ben has set a new personal best on his cycle route around Aylsham. The bar has been raised. Hosted on Acast. This week Andrew is joined by Ben and Webby, and SFI is back on the agenda. The numbers speak for themselves — 40,000 applicants, 12,500 managed to get in. The team then turn their attention to war and what it means for markets. Webby makes the case that the market is currently undervalued, and Andrew closes with his concerns about new crop spring barley tonnages. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
This week Andrew is joined by Ben to dig into SFI. Andrew kicks off the market report with talk of Biscuit-gate. They start with the frustrations around getting into the scheme in the first place, before making the case that UK farmers are already doing plenty to look after the land — with or without a government scheme to tell them so. The pair then venture into slightly existential territory, discussing grain merchants as an endangered species, before closing out on the fundamental unfairness of the SFI system. Hosted on Acast. In this week's Bitesize, Andrew opens with the two main factors driving prices right now. He makes the case that the UK is shorter of wheat than most people realise, and touches on the current state of Russian-Ukrainian grain flows. Andrew also flags a limited supply of low nitrogen spring barley as one to watch, before closing with a word of caution — Russian and Ukrainian wheat will find its way to market eventually, so don't expect elevated prices to last forever.
