The Last Trip

101: Jim Sullivan: Santa Rosa, New Mexico

The Last Trip

Show Notes

In 1975, a musician named Jim Sullivan got into his car and left Los Angeles behind. He was heading east, chasing a new beginning - or maybe running from something he couldn’t name. He was tall, handsome, magnetic - and his music carried that same restless energy. Songs about highways, lost souls, and vanishing into the unknown. The kind of lyrics that feel like they’re trying to tell you something… if you’re really listening. Somewhere along that long stretch of desert road, Jim stopped - and from that moment on, no one knows what happened next. His story faded into rumor, mystery, and myth - tangled up in the same strange beauty that filled his songs. Today, we’re going to follow the same road Jim Sullivan took - the one that led him deep into the desert… and out of the world we know. Listen as we dive into New Mexico, the case of Jim Sullivan, and how to stay alive on vacation.

Over the last two episodes, we've followed the story of Anni Dewani from her life in Sweden and complicated relationship with Shrien Dewani, to their lavish wedding in India and the honeymoon in South Africa where everything changed. On November 13, 2010, Anni and Shrien were riding through Cape Town with their driver, Zola Tongo, when their vehicle was taken over by two armed men. Tongo was released. Then Shrien. Anni was not. The following morning, the 27-year-old newlywed was found dead in the backseat of the abandoned Volkswagen. But what initially appeared to be a random carjacking quickly became something much more complicated. Police identified the men inside the vehicle, and the investigation eventually led back to Tongo himself. He admitted the hijacking had been staged and made an explosive allegation: Shrien Dewani had hired him to arrange Anni's murder. Shrien denied it. And that left one enormous question at the center of this case. Could prosecutors prove that Anni's husband had actually planned her murder—or had the men responsible for her death accused an innocent man in an attempt to save themselves? It would take nearly four years before that question finally reached a courtroom. This is Part Three of the story of Anni Dewani: the trial and the verdict. Listen as we dive into South Africa, the case of Anni Dewani, and how to stay alive on vacation. Do you have a story to share? Last week, in Part One of our three-part series on the murder of Anni Dewani, we followed Anni from her life in Sweden to her whirlwind relationship with Shrien Dewani, their lavish wedding in India, and the honeymoon that was supposed to mark the beginning of their life together. Instead, less than 48 hours after arriving in Cape Town, everything changed. On the night of November 13, 2010, Anni and Shrien were riding through Gugulethu with their driver, Zola Tongo, when two armed men took control of their vehicle. Tongo was forced out. Then Shrien. But Anni was driven away. The following morning, the Volkswagen was found abandoned in Khayelitsha. Inside, police found 27-year-old Anni dead in the backseat. She had been shot through the neck. At first, it appeared to be a horrific carjacking that had ended in murder. But investigators were about to discover that the story might not be nearly that simple. Because within days, arrests would be made. And then someone involved would start talking.n What he told police would turn the investigation completely upside down— and transform Anni Dewani's murder into an international sensation. This is Part Two: the investigation. Listen as we dive into South Africa, the case of Anni Dewani, and how to stay alive on vacation. Do you have a story to share?
