Ep. 297: Why are we so obsessed with the ‘90s when it comes to hair? Talking iconic black hairstyles and unforgettable '90s moments with Nneka Allison of HoochTeeStyle
The Charisse ReportShow Notes
This week it’s a very niche episode focused on 90s hair, specifically the impact and artistry involved in black hairstyles of that era and how Nneka Allison, founder of HoochTeestyle Hairstyling is bringing them back to life in a fresh new way. I first heard about Nneka, AKA Tee via her PR Keysha Davis, and when she sent me Tee’s press release I instantly thought that she must be based in Atlanta or somewhere else in the US because her work was so niche, so precise and so specific, but then I found out that not only is she based in the UK, she’s basically down the road from me! In this episode Tee breaks down her quintessential '90s hairstyles and how cultural influences such as Freaknik (an annual spring break street party in Atlanta during the '80s and '90s) and musicians such as Lil Kim and Mary J Blige inspired her to bring these styles back to life. Today, we're doing things differently; we're dissecting the Mugler FW26 fashion show. If you know me then you'll know I love a deep dive, and in a world where everything can be criticised or vilified within a matter of seconds, I thought it was time to start doing deep dives into some of my favourite fashion collections. So, in this episode, we've got interviews with the Mugler key makeup artist, Karine Westerlund; the key hairstylist Anthony Turner and sound designer Theo Teardo as well as a quick chat with Mugler's Creative Director Miguel Castro Freitas. On top of those interviews we're also going to break down this collection piece by piece in an effort to answer the questions that actually matter, such as, did creative director Miguel Castro Freitas accomplish what he set out to do and did the collection genuinely evolve the house's identity, or was it simply recycling old ideas with a new press release? I'd love to know what you think so if you're listening or watching on Spotify feel free to let me know in the comments, or find me on Instagram. My latest guest is the brilliant fashion designer Laina Rauma, someone I first interviewed back in 2015, when I had a blog. Remember those? I remember when I first followed Laina because she had and still has, this amazing editorial eye and she's always seemed to be able to predict what was coming next, years in advance. I wanted to interview Los Angeles-based Laina again because so much can happen in a decade and I wanted to just find out how she’s getting on because she is one of those rare independent designers that manages to do it all; create amazing pieces, build a thriving business, create social media content to promote her work all while being a human being existing in a world that has these major ebbs and flows. In this episode Laina shares on an early loss that inspired her to leave Vancouver, Canada for Los Angeles with just her sewing machine. Let me know what you think of this episode; you can leave a comment if you’re listening on Spotify or reach out to @thecharissereport on Instagram. Also be sure to follow Laina @lainarauma Don’t forget I’ve also got a newsletter and you can subscribe for free at thecharissereport.substack.com and be sure to find me on Instagram and Youtube! Today I have the amazing session manicurist Ama Quashie as my guest. Ama Quashie is a next level nail artist who has perfected the nails of Pink, Solange, Michaela Coel, Zoe Kravitz, Lenny Kravitz and many more. Her work has been seen in British, French and American Vogue as well as W magazine, The Gentlewoman, Dazed... she’s worked on campaigns for Bottega Veneta, Saint Laurent, Prada, Loewe – the list goes on and on, and she’s also the go-to key manicurist when it comes to fashion week shows. Interestingly, Ama is also the only manicurist in the Business of Fashion 500, a list that chronicles the best of the best when it comes to the people shaping the fashion industry. So there's definitely a bigger conversation to be had there, and we get into the issues that manicurists often face in an industry that doesn't always give them the credit they deserve. In this episode Ama talks about the level of professionalism that is needed in the fashion industry and how you also need to learn how to put yourself forward and knowing how to balance the two. Of course she also talks about those stunning Chanel mermaid nails and shares on the brilliance and warmth of Creative Director Matthieu Blazy himself. Todays guest is Eve Salvail, a Canadian model who was one of the most iconic androgynous faces of the '90s. Unlike the Cindys, Lindas and Naomis of the day, Eve exuded a punk attitude that was only magnified by the fact she had a Chinese dragon tattooed on her scalp. Her truly unique appearance made her the perfect muse to iconic French fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier, who would drape and design directly onto Eve's body. As well as standing out on the runway, Eve also stood out in cult films such as The Fifth Element and Pret a Porter and when I first sat down to chat with her I had no idea she would be so completely honest and open. In this episode Eve opens up about so many of her experiences during the '90s and while many of them make for an entertaining listen, she also shares on darker times. As such we do cover issues such as mental health, addiction and eating disorders, so if that's something you don't need right now, please listen to another episode. Other than reading her memoir – Sois toi et ‘tes belle – which roughly translates to be yourself and you are beautiful – this is the most upfront and honest take on being a supermodel you can get. If you want to see just how stunning Eve is, head to my Substack. You can read it for free at thecharissereport.substack.com but do please subscribe! Also, I've made a couple of videos about Eve so check them out on my Instagram @charisse_kenion or on TikTok orYouTube. See you next time and thanks for being here.
Today my guest is Tiffany Bartok, the woman who, back in 2013 decided to make a documentary about the legendary makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin. Little did she know it would take numerous interview requests spread across several few years and along the way someone else would also decide to make a Kevyn Aucoin documentary! If you don’t already know Kevyn Aucoin, he was a brilliant, influential makeup artist who rose to fame in the ‘80s and ‘90s. While he worked with all the great photographers, including Albert Watson, Herb Ritts, Steven Klein and Steven Meisel, he was known for always taking Polaroids of his own looks and becoming one of the highest paid makeup artists in history. In this episode, Tiffany – who’s also the host of one of my fave geeky podcasts Look Behind the Look – shares on the ups and downs and the realities of making a documentary and also about the brilliance of Kevyn himself. This episode is a must-listen for anyone who loves makeup, is a fan of Kevyn’s work or anyone who’s ever wondered about what it takes to make a documentary.
