What if the Cold War was fought not only on battlefields, but in the shadows? For decades, Western European countries maintained secret “stay-behind” networks designed to operate behind enemy lines if the Soviet Union invaded. When the existence of Italy’s clandestine network—known as Gladio—was publicly revealed in 1990, it opened a disturbing chapter in Cold War history. Who created these secret armies? What was their relationship with NATO, the CIA and European intelligence agencies? And what happened when the Cold War became a battle for political control within Europe itself?
