Eight-time Irish Champion National Hunt Trainer Noel Meade joins Jane Mangan for an extraordinary journey through more than 50 years in horse racing.
This week’s Inside Track: Ireland looks ahead to a big weekend of Irish racing, with Leopardstown hosting its AutumnFest meeting and Limerick staging two days of National Hunt action. Meanwhile, over in the UK, there are five Group 1 races at Ascot, on Champions Day.
As the flat season enters its autumn finale and National Hunt season gathers momentum, Jane Mangan is joined by racing legends Barry Geraghty and Paddy Flood to preview a fascinating weekend of racing in Ireland and Britain. From the big handicaps at Naas to the opening jumps action at Fairyhouse and Cork, and the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket, there is plenty to discuss as the team share their thoughts, fancies and horses to follow. We preview the weekend's flat action at Naas, including the Birdcatcher Nursery, Listed sprint, Auction Series Final, Beggar's End Handicap and Bluebell Stakes. There is a look ahead to the opening National Hunt action, including the Beginners' Chase, Maiden Hurdle, Handicap Chase and three-mile Novices' Hurdle. We look at the leading two-year-old colts competing the Dewhurst Stakes, with Desert Castle and Darkness Falls going head-to-head. Jane, Barry and Paddy also put forward their weekend fancies as Sam Norris from William Hill discusses the potential prices, including Final Orders having a crack at the Pardubice. And, of course, there's the Mystery Horse, as Barry and Paddy try to out-fox Jane and the listeners again. Kevin O'Ryan has spent virtually his entire life immersed in Irish racing, as a jockey, jockeys' agent and one of the most familiar faces on Irish racecourses. In this edition of Inside Track: Ireland – In Conversation, Kevin sits down with Jane Mangan to tell the story behind the familiar television personality. He reflects on the racing family and characters who shaped him, his own riding career and the unexpected opportunities that led him into broadcasting. Kevin also speaks movingly about his great friend Pat Smullen, the shock of Pat's cancer diagnosis and the phone call after his operation that Kevin will never forget. And beneath Kevin's famously outgoing personality, Jane discovers an intensely competitive character driven by a fear of failure, whether he's representing his jockeys, working on television or simply trying to win.
