Your Brain on Technology: Dopamine, Distraction, AI & Mental Health

The Health Review

Show Notes

Our phones are rarely more than a few feet away from us. We wake up to notifications, spend much of the day moving between screens and increasingly turn to AI not only for information, but for advice, decisions and even emotional support. So what is all of this actually doing to our brains?

In this special episode of The Health Review, I’m bringing together three conversations exploring how modern technology may be changing the way we think, feel, focus and connect with other people.

Neuroscientist Anne-Sophie Fluri explains why we so often reach for our phones in moments of boredom, loneliness or uncertainty, how dopamine reinforces those automatic behaviours and why constantly filling every quiet moment may leave us with less space to process our emotions and work out what we actually want.

Digital detox coach Colin Corby looks at the impact of constant stimulation on attention and mental fatigue, why our phones can become a kind of comfort blanket and why scrolling can leave us exhausted even when we feel as though we’ve been doing very little. We also discuss what it might mean to start treating mental recovery with the same importance we now give physical recovery.

And Cyberpsychologist Dr Elaine Kasket takes the conversation into the age of AI, asking what happens when we begin outsourcing not just tasks, but decisions, difficult conversations and emotional support to machines. We talk about self-trust, relationships, human connection and whether making life increasingly frictionless could come at a psychological cost.

This isn’t an anti-technology conversation. Technology is part of modern life and it isn’t going anywhere. But these three conversations raise an important question: as our devices become more powerful and more embedded in our lives, how do we make sure we’re still protecting the parts of being human that matter most?
