Summary
Recent discussions in physics and neuroscience explore the nature of space and time, questioning whether these dimensions are objective realities or constructs of the human mind. Historically, thinkers like Isaac Newton posited that space and time are absolute entities, while philosophers such as Leibniz and Kant argued for a relational understanding, viewing them as networks of relationships between objects and events. Current theories suggest that our understanding of these dimensions may be evolving, with many physicists believing that future discoveries could challenge the fundamental nature of space and time.
Neuroscience contributes to this debate by examining how the brain processes spatial and temporal information. Research has identified specific neurons, known as place cells and grid cells, that help create cognitive maps of our environment. Place cells activate in response to specific locations, while grid cells provide a coordinate system that allows for navigation through space. Interestingly, these mechanisms may also extend to tracking sequences of events, blurring the lines between spatial and temporal processing in the brain.
The findings indicate that our perception of space and time may not be absolute but rather relational and adaptable, shaped by our experiences and the context of our surroundings. This aligns with the views of historical figures like Einstein, who suggested that time is not an independent entity but emerges from the behavior of matter. As researchers continue to investigate these complex interactions, the implications for our understanding of reality and the nature of existence remain profound.

Physics is the business of figuring out the structure of the world. So are our brains. But sometimes physics comes to conclusions that are in direct conflict with concepts fundamental to our minds, such as the realness of space and time. How do we tell who’s correct? Are time and space objective realities or human-invented concepts?

They’re born inside of a cloud of gas and dust, they live their lives fusing hydrogen into helium in their cores, shining bright and stable for as long as that hydrogen lasts. Then they die, each going out in its own beautiful way. How a star dies depends on its mass. The bigger they are, the shorter their lives and the more sublime their deaths. Sometimes our musings are insightful, sometimes incoherent, and usually at least somewhat naive. This is the cosmic microwave background radiation - the left-over heat-glow from the very early universe. We can’t see this microwave light with our eyes, but we can catch it with even a simple radio antenna. As soon as we became aware of its existence we’ve been feverishly building better and better devices to collect it. Why? Because it encodes so many secrets. And within this light, a group of scientists have just found evidence of the limits of space. A clue that our universe may be actually be finite in size. Today on Space Time Journal Club we’ll delve into the Nature Astronomy paper that just reported this: Planck evidence for a closed Universe and a possible crisis for cosmology by Eleonora Di Valentino, Alessandro Melchiorri, and Joe Silk.Special Thanks to Our PatreonsBig BangAlexander TamasAndrew and BrennaCraig StonahaDavid BarnholdtDavid NicklasFabrice EapJohn SJuan BenetMatt MillerMorgan HoughQuasarMark HeisingMark RosenthalVinnie FalcoHypernovaChuck ZegarDanton SpiveyDonal BotkinEdmund FokschanerHank SJohn HofmannJohn PollockJohn R. This state of absolute cold is the zero-point on the Kelvin temperature scale, corresponding to -273.15 Celsius. Using lasers and magnetic fields, we’ve now managed to cool certain substances to less than a billionth of a Kelvin. Doing so has revealed some bizarre quantum states of matter. But quantum mechanics may also prevent us from ever reaching absolute zero. Understanding the limit to cold will lead us to an understanding of the nature of the quantum vacuum itself.Written and Hosted by Matt O'DowdProduced by Rusty WardGraphics by Kurt RossAssistant Editing and Sound Design by Mike PetrowMade by Kornhaber Brown (www.kornhaberbrown.com)Special thanks to our Patreon Big Bang, Quasar and Hypernova Supporters: Big BangBITISMCoolAsCatsDavid NicklasRichard SenegorQuasarTambe BarsbayMayank M.
