Dr Allen Williams on resilience to drought

Grounded: The regenerative farming podcast

Show Notes

Following one of the driest springs on record and with much of the UK facing water shortages, Kyle and Stuart catch up with Dr Allen Williams to discuss how regenerative practices can help build resilience to drought. Allen is one of the most well-known names in regen and co-founder of Understanding Ag alongside Gabe Brown. This episode digs into the foundations of the soil biology which helps retain and cycle water, the role of grazing and the co-benefits for resilience to extreme wet weather. This podcast is brought to you by Regenerate Outcomes. Regenerate Outcomes supports farmers to grow profits and improve crop and livestock performance by building functional soil. Receive one-on-one mentoring from experienced regenerative farmers to increase the productivity of your soil, cut costs and reduce external inputs. In the first of our autumn and winter recordings for Grounded ‘Live’ we partnered with Planning for Profit to discuss what it takes to run a profitable, resilient farm business. Hosts Stuart Johnson and Kyle Richardville were joined by Sam Chorlton, who set up Planning for Profit in the UK, adapting it from the internationally respected Ranching for Profit course in the United States. The five-day programme works with farmers to take a practical look at understanding their finances, support them to make better decisions and help build a business that works for them. Jamie Leslie, a mixed farmer from Shetland - who is also a member of Planning for Profit’s executive link board - joined the conversation to give his perspective on putting some of the principles he learned on the programme into practice. Listen now for a conversation covering topics, including the basics of finance and economics, how to truly determine the costs in your farm business and effective succession planning. In the latest episode of Grounded: The regenerative farming podcast, Stuart and Kyle meet Verity Megginson, who farms arable and sheep in East Yorkshire. Verity farms 330 acres of arable at Kirkburn Manor Farm, with the help of her daughter and two teenage sons. She rents another 40 acres for grazing 100 Exlana ewes, which also graze cover and forage crops as part of the arable rotation. She originally used conventional methods when she took on the farm six years ago, but soon realised she wanted to farm in a different way. She joined Regenerate Outcomes in 2024. Tune in now to hear Verity’s story and hear more about regenerative arable farming, the link between regen and physiotherapy, glyphosate versus the plough and the problem of prejudiced foxes. In the latest episode of Grounded: The regenerative farming podcast, Kyle and Stuart talk to farmer Tom Edmondson. Tom gradually began taking over the running of his family farm, near Milton Keynes, in 2012. His move towards regenerative practices was partly driven by seeing good results from the use of a cover crop after he took control of the arable operation in 2015. The conversation covers a range of topics, from Tom's career working with farmers for the local water company, discovering regen 'by accident', the benefits to his mental health and the challenges and opportunities of direct selling.
