In this episode of The Koi Perspective Podcast, I’m joined by Allan Gavin from EZpond to talk about the evolution of koi pond design and why fiberglass ponds have become such a big part of the modern hobby.💡 This episode is proudly sponsored by OASE: https://oase.comAllan shares his journey from boat manufacturing into the koi world, and how that background in water-tight engineering shaped the way EZpond approaches pond construction today. We dive into how pond sizes, garden spaces, and customer expectations have changed over the years, and why smaller, cleaner, more aesthetically pleasing ponds are now in such high demand, especially in the UK.We also get into the practical side of things. From bottom drains and skimmers to gel coat finishes, sealants, and structural longevity, Allan explains what really matters when it comes to building a pond that lasts. There’s a lot of honest talk in this episode about build quality, real-world testing, customer service, and why “buy cheap, buy twice” often rings painfully true in this hobby.Towards the end, we look ahead at where pond technology is heading, how EZpond is continuing to innovate, and why younger generations are showing more interest in koi keeping than ever before. If you’re thinking about building a pond, upgrading your setup, or just want a deeper understanding of what goes into quality pond design, this one’s for you.🎧 Topics covered in this episode:• The rise of fiberglass koi ponds• How pond design has evolved over time• The shift toward smaller, more modern pond builds• Windows, bottom drains, skimmers, and sealants• Longevity and real-world durability testing• Why manufacturing quality matters• Future innovations in pond technology• Keeping koi relevant for the next generation📱 Follow us for more koi content:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/TheKoiPerspectiveFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheKoiPerspectiveTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@the.koi.perspective🛍️ Explore our digital magazine and merchandise:Magazine: https://www.thekoiperspective.comShop: https://www.thekoiperspective.com/store🎧 Find us on Spotify and other podcasting apps:https://pod.link/1787901550⏱ Chapters:00:00 Introduction to EZpond and Guests01:07 The History of Pond Windows03:15 Transition from Boat Manufacturing to Ponds08:29 Why Customers Choose EZpond11:44 The Advantages of Fiberglass Ponds16:04 Innovations in Pond Design and Filtration20:46 The Launch of EZ Sealant23:20 The Development of Storm Drains26:58 Introduction to Pond Construction27:25 The Shift to Ponds with Windows28:31 Engineering Large Tanks29:59 Sealant Techniques for Longevity31:52 Real-World Testing of Pond Durability32:40 Innovations in Skimmer Design36:48 The Importance of Quality in Pond Products45:45 Future Innovations in Pond TechnologyIf you enjoyed this episode, make sure to like, subscribe, and drop a comment below with your thoughts. Source water could be quietly wrecking koi ponds, and this conversation with Joe and Dave Bradley from @dkoi-tv into the kind of real-world problem most keepers would rather ignore until it’s too late. If your fish look “off” for no obvious reason, especially bigger koi, this episode will hit home.Dave opens up about a brutal season where even an RO setup, advanced filtration, water testing, vet checks, and microscope work still haven’t explained what’s happening in his pond. Joe shares the same mystery in his own system, from deteriorating skin and stubborn sumi issues to fish that suddenly crash with no parasites, no bad bacteria, and no clear answer. For more detailed koi articles, breeder insights, pond advice and expert opinion, sign up to The Koi Perspective, my bi-monthly printed koi magazine: https://www.thekoiperspective.com/subscribe📱 Follow us for more koi content:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/TheKoiPerspectiveFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheKoiPerspectiveTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@the.koi.perspective🛍️ Explore our printed magazine and merchandise:Magazine: https://www.thekoiperspective.comShop: https://www.thekoiperspective.com/store🎧 Find us on Spotify and other podcasting apps:https://pod.link/1787901550#KoiPond #KoiFiltration #KoiKeeping #PondFiltration #Koi #KoiPondFilter #GardenPond #KoiHealth #ClearPondWater #KoiMasterclass #PondLife #KoiKeeper #FishPond #KoiPondBuild #TheKoiPerspective
