The Flood Cycle That Bound a Town in Spirals

A midnight call from Shelly Hensley prompts a veterinarian to rush to the Hensley farm, where a mysterious affliction is affecting both livestock and a young boy named Nikki. Upon arrival, the vet discovers Nikki has a spiral-shaped wound on his back, which appears to be spreading. The Hensleys, along with other townsfolk, are reluctant to seek outside medical help, believing that traditional remedies and community practices are more effective in dealing with the strange illness that seems to have struck the area.

As the vet investigates further, he uncovers a pattern of similar spiral wounds across various farms in the region, suggesting a deeper, possibly epidemic issue linked to the river that floods the area every seven years. The townspeople, bound by a pact with the river, believe that they must sacrifice their own to appease it and prevent greater calamity. The vet grapples with the moral implications of this cycle, as he learns that the river demands a price for its bounty, and those who try to escape its grasp often face dire consequences.

The narrative unfolds as the vet becomes increasingly entwined with the community's secrets and rituals, ultimately facing a choice between joining the pact or risking the wrath of the river. As the floodwaters rise, tensions escalate, leading to a climactic ritual where the townsfolk mark themselves to bind the river's power. In the aftermath, the vet finds himself transformed, now a part of the community's cycle, tending to wounds and navigating the delicate balance between survival and the haunting legacy of the spiral. The story concludes with the vet accepting his role, aware that the spiral will return, but hopeful for a future where the cycle might finally be broken.
