Summary
The Soviet Union prepares for a decisive offensive in the Winter War against Finland, having reorganized its forces and amassed over 30 divisions on the Karelian Isthmus. The Finnish defenses, particularly the Mannerheim Line, have been under constant pressure, with Finnish troops exhausted from relentless Soviet bombardments and assaults. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Finnish forces remain determined to defend their positions.
As the Soviets launch their offensive on February 1, they initially make gains, capturing sections of the Finnish trenches. However, Finnish commanders, including General Osterman, regroup their forces to counter the Soviet advances. The fighting intensifies, with both sides experiencing heavy casualties. The situation remains fluid, with the Soviets breaching the Mannerheim Line at various points, prompting Finnish leaders to reinforce their defenses and prepare for a potential retreat.
By mid-February, the Finnish forces are forced to withdraw to a secondary defensive line as Soviet pressure mounts. The conflict escalates, leading to fierce battles for key positions. Despite the challenges, Finnish troops continue to resist, demonstrating remarkable resilience. Ultimately, the war concludes with the signing of the Moscow peace treaty, resulting in significant territorial losses for Finland, but also highlighting the heavy toll taken on Soviet forces. The outcome sets the stage for future conflicts in the region, as Finland prepares for the next phase of its military history.

As Spain lost control of its colonial possessions, from the ashes of their old Viceroyalty of the Rio De La Plata the nations we now know as Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay slowly formed. In a small civil conflict between two political parties in the smallest country in the region, Uruguay, the greatest war in South American history was sparked. The War of the Triple Alliance or as it is also often called the Paraguayan war culminated at the battle of Tuyuti fought in 1866. This battle is widely considered the Waterloo of South America. This episode unpacks Mithraism—the cult of Mithras that flourished from the 1st to 4th centuries CE alongside Judaism, Christianity, Gnosticism, and Rome’s traditional gods. We trace debated origins (Persian “Mithra,” Kommagene syncretism, Cilician pirates), the explosive spread across legions and cities, and why mithraea—from Syria to Germania—became hubs for tightly knit, male initiates. Through archaeology and iconography we decode the Tauroctony (bull-slaying scene), astral symbolism, and seven grades of initiation (Corax to Pater). We also examine the Mithras Liturgy, the Greek Magical Papyri, and the cult’s ties to imperial ideology (yes, even Commodus). Finally, we explore Mithraism’s competition with Christianity, its decline in Late Antiquity, and its enduring legacy in art, scholarship, and pop culture. If you’re into ancient religions, Roman soldiers, esoteric rites, and sky-lore, this is your deep dive. How Christianity and Judaism Split: https://youtu.be/iCyQmLd7xAQEarly Christian Schisms: https://youtu.be/xeYQPzgN3yAGreat Schism Between Greek and Latin Christianity: https://youtu.be/a6rWf0k8d78How Islam Split into the Sunni and Shia Branches: https://youtu.be/-85dXjgMiSUEastern Roman Empire: Why So Many Civil Wars?: https://youtu.be/SK_yHooLu1sRise of the Cossacks: https://youtu.be/UQ_ocyTRRIECrusades From the Muslim Perspective: https://youtu.be/t8RZtYvW02gEarly Muslim Expansion - Yarmouk, Al-Qadisiyyah: https://youtu.be/r2cEIDZwG5M Early Muslim Expansion - Egypt and Iran: https://youtu.be/baHT2nR5Wr4 Muslim Schism: https://youtu.be/-85dXjgMiSU Third Crusade: https://youtu.be/jCyCSgsFXKQ Fourth Crusade: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Vp_IENiSnA&list=PLaBYW76inbX4ZjR4rodOOSc-zL1orP4hW First Crusade: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkyYjpYLORI&list=PLaBYW76inbX6RqjG027zLO_svn3Fdv7Qa Sultanate of Women in the Ottoman Empire: https://youtu.be/OEzS8D4IidA How the German Empire Provoked Ottoman Jihad in WWI: https://youtu.be/8LCpbgVx9kY Ottoman Battles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txyqS5yuw30&list=PLaBYW76inbX5BKGRPzlqdztQySZmJLjJt Why the Ottomans Never Colonized America: https://youtu.be/lM_Wzt_Z228Why the Ottoman Sultans Killed their Brothers: https://youtu.be/vN7LgUIOAVw Cem Sultan: Ottoman Prince in the Heart of Europe: https://youtu.be/3w9POQMt5jk Ottoman Pirates: https://youtu.be/5jguevSDIuY Turkification of Anatolia: https://youtu.be/JBgq1taoUsY Hashashins: https://youtu.be/vG8qmlKdRjs Christian Schism: https://youtu.be/a6rWf0k8d78 Mos Maiorum: What led to the fall of the Roman Republic?: https://youtu.be/BNWfDWk6ohM How Rome Conquered Greece: https://youtu.be/v5q1rerf-qw Caesar in Gaul: https://youtu.be/LRV185XaMIM Support us on Patreon: http://www.patreon.com/KingsandGenerals or Paypal: http://paypal.me/kingsandgenerals or by joining the youtube membership: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMmaBzfCCwZ2KqaBJjkj0fw/join We are grateful to our patrons and sponsors, who made this video possible: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ooKPbpq0z8ciEjz5Zmrga4-gWRmripm0u4BHMkkXHVc/edit?usp=sharingAnimation and illustration: Evelin AcostaScript: Christos NicolaouNarration: Liam Taylor✔ Merch store ► https://teespring.com/stores/kingsandgenerals✔ Pat Learn more about your ad choices.
