Richard Ramirez: The Night Stalker Prowls the City of Angels
BioGraphics - True Biographies & History's Most Fascinating PeopleSummary
Richard Ramirez, infamously known as the Night Stalker, terrorized Los Angeles in the mid-1980s, committing a series of brutal crimes that left the city in fear. His reign of terror began on June 28, 1984, with the murder of 79-year-old Jenny Vinkow, marking the start of a killing spree characterized by home invasions, sexual assaults, and murders. Ramirez's victims ranged from the elderly to young women, and his methods often included extreme violence, such as stabbing and bludgeoning, followed by ransacking the homes for valuables.
As the attacks escalated, police struggled to connect the dots between the seemingly random crimes. Witnesses provided descriptions of a tall, thin man with distinctive rotting teeth, but it wasn't until a fingerprint was discovered in a stolen car that investigators identified Ramirez. By the end of August 1985, he was recognized as the most wanted man in Los Angeles, leading to his capture after a failed carjacking attempt.
Ramirez's trial became a media sensation, where he displayed a disturbing bravado, often referencing Satanism. He was ultimately convicted of 13 murders and sentenced to death, spending 24 years on death row before his death in 2013. His legacy remains a chilling reminder of the violence that gripped Los Angeles during his killing spree, marking him as one of the most notorious serial killers in American history.
