THE 4th KIWI DERBY! Phoenix vs Auckland FC with TERRY McFLYNN | EP27 - The Unused Subs
The Unused SubsShow Notes
Our home ground of Tyler St Sport was unavailable this week so we popped next-door to THE BRIT to welcome back Jacob Spoonley and Paul Ifill to the Subs bench, and handed a debut to Auckland FC’s Director of Football Terry McFlynn.
IT’S NZ DERBY WEEK! NIX v BLACK KNIGHTS… So of course we talk about tactics, expectations, and memories of last season’s encounters. Can an injury-ravaged Wellington Phoenix win their first all-kiwi clash, or will Auckland FC make it 4 from 4?!
We wrap the weekend just gone for both teams too… just what was that freekick routine with Ishige, Carlo Armiento and Fin Roa Conchie? And how satisfying was it to see Sam Cosgrove nod one home from a Francis De Vries inswinger?
Goran and Terry spent some time together at the OFC Professional League launch last week, so the Subs rave about how beneficial the new competition will be for the Oceania region. Isn't it wild that New Zealand has THREE professional football teams? And Goran compares himself and Ali Williams to Paul Ifill and Roy Keane. Hmmm.
Terry McFlynn picks Paul Ifill for his 5 a-side team (or does he?) and marvels at the untouchable Fernando Torres and the masterful Joe Cole. All of this and so much more in this week’s episode of The Unused Subs!

Spain has defeated Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final to become WORLD CHAMPIONS for the second time! On the surface, a solitary goal in extra time doesn't sound overly impressive or convincing, but dig a little deeper and you will see that this was not only a one-sided finale, but one of the most dominant World Cup campaigns, ever.
England has been defeated by Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Semifinals. And of course, the finger of blame is pointing directly at England's manager Thomas Tuchel. Were his defensive tactics in the final half hour of the clash 'cowardly' as has been reported in the UK media since the 2-1 loss?
Cristiano Ronaldo to play on for 2030. Yep, CR7 will play at a home World Cup, at the age of 45.
