Show Notes
Today, we’re honoured to welcome Garvin Pinette to the show—a proud father, passionate public servant, archery champion, and a man who’s turned his deepest struggles into powerful fuel for change.
Garvin is a Correctional Officer and Peer Support Coordinator with Manitoba Corrections, and the founder of the department’s first-ever Peer Support Program and Trauma-Informed Care Committee. After surviving three traumatic events early in his career and receiving a PTSD diagnosis, Garvin faced down some of the darkest days of his life—and chose to fight, not just for himself, but for the mental wellness of others in uniform.
He partnered with the MGEU to launch the Healthy Minds at Work Campaign, building out a full Peer Support Training Program. Today, Garvin is a full-time Staff Trainer, a Divisional Coordinator, and a recognized mental health leader in first responder circles.
But that’s just part of the story.

More from Shit My Dad Taught Me

What happens when a community comes together to turn heartbreak into hope?
In this episode of Shit My Dad Taught Me, we sit down with Canadian broadcaster, author and radio personality Roz Weston for a conversation about media, fatherhood, grief, family, friendship and finding meaning outside of your career. Roz reflects on his journey from growing up in a small town and landing an early opportunity with The Howard Stern Show to building a decades long career in Canadian entertainment, including ET Canada and The Roz & Mocha Show. He shares what he's learned from interviewing some of the biggest names in entertainment, his relationship with Mocha and how the media industry changed with the rise of social media. He also opens up about his father's journey to sobriety, losing his dad, processing grief while writing his memoir and how those lessons now influence the father he is to his daughter, Roxy. Roz also shares his perspective on raising a teenager around social media, dealing with online criticism and why the things you love most in life don't necessarily need to be your job. It's a funny, personal and thoughtful conversation about reinvention, loss, fatherhood, career longevity and building a life that means more than what you do for work.
