The Lord God's declaration to the serpent about enmity between it and the woman, and between their respective offspring, sets the stage for the entire biblical narrative and our understanding of the world. This enmity culminates in Christ, the offspring of the woman, who came to crush the serpent's head, symbolizing the ultimate defeat of Satan and his works. As we enter the season of Lent, we are reminded of our own role in this ongoing battle against sin and the devil, mirroring Christ's temptation and victory in the wilderness. Our Lenten practices--fasting, prayer, and repentance--are not mere rituals but real acts of war against the spiritual evils that persist in opposing God's kingdom. These practices, coupled with our reaffirmation of baptismal vows to renounce Satan and all his works, fortify us against the devil's intensified attacks during this holy season. Moreover, the assurance of forgiveness through Christ's sacrifice empowers us to resist and overcome the devil, not only in Lent but in our daily lives, as we await the complete fulfillment of God's promise to make all things new through Christ's return.
