Early heart disease deaths rise to 14-year highUploaded 31-01-24Over 100,000 excess deaths involving cardiovascular conditions in England since February 2020Heart and circulatory diseases cause around a quarter of all deaths in England,Over 140,000 deaths each year,or one death every four minutes.Healthcare costs relating to heart and circulatory diseases, £8.3 billion each year. The cost of cardiovascular disease to the wider economy in England,(including premature death, disability and informal costs),is estimated to be £22 billion each year.Latest NHS England figures show that the number of people waiting for cardiac care at the end of November in England was 402,208.The heart care waiting list is 72% larger than in February 2020. This is an increase of 169,000 people – enough to fill Wembley stadium nearly twice over.In 2022Over 39,000 people in England died prematurely of cardiovascular conditions, heart attacks, coronary heart disease and stroke,an average of 750 people each week. It is the highest annual total since 2008. Since 2020, the premature death rate for cardiovascular disease has risen year-on-yearThis is the first time there has been a clear reversal in the trend for almost 60 years. The BHF says more analysis is needed to understand what is driving the trend. Dr Sonya Babu-Narayan, Associate Medical Director at the BHF and Consultant Cardiologist, said: We are still seeing more people than expected die from cardiovascular conditions overall – more than any other disease group. It’s clear to me that urgent intervention is long overdue. In January 2023, the Government announced a Major Conditions Strategy to tackle the biggest drivers of ill health and early death in England https://app.powerbi.com/view?r=eyJrIjoiYmUwNmFhMjYtNGZhYS00NDk2LWFlMTAtOTg0OGNhNmFiNGM0IiwidCI6ImVlNGUxNDk5LTRhMzUtNGIyZS1hZDQ3LTVmM2NmOWRlODY2NiIsImMiOjh9 Learn more about your ad choices. Professor of Oncology, Angus Dalgleish gives vital information on a repurposed drug he uses for his cancer patients, given at a very low dose. This is Low Dose Naltrexone.Uploaded 13-06-25Check out the LDN trust website for much more, https://ldnresearchtrust.orgNaltrexone at low doses (LDN) and its relevance to cancer therapyhttps://openaccess.sgul.ac.uk/id/eprint/114135/Naltrexone was designed to inhibit opioid receptors without activating them and hence used to block the stimulatory effects of morphine and heroin. It was noted that in certain patients being treated with naltrexone for an opioid addiction many reported significant secondary benefit when being weaned off naltrexone. This group of patients had chronic inflammatory and autoimmune conditions and reported improvements whilst using the lower dosages of naltrexone. There have also been recent anecdotal reports of cancer resolution following the use of low doses of naltrexone (LDN). However, the mechanism of action is unclear.Areas covered We review three mechanisms through which LDN can influence cancer progression; namely, (a) antagonism of receptors to which LDN binds, which include toll-like receptors 7–9 that lead to IL-6 suppression b) modulation of immune function in patients; and c) direct inhibition of signaling pathways involved in cancer cell control, including the priming of pro-apoptotic pathways.Expert opinion Considering the increase in the number of anecdotal reports of activity, there will likely be a bigger drive toward using LDN in the oncological setting. These reports support clinical trials of LDN in cancer, especially when given in combination with certain chemotherapy.https://ldnresearchtrust.org/angus-dalgleish-md-role-ldn-management-cancer-2018-conference-ldn-low-dose-naltrexoneMajor clinical evidence on the use of low-dose naltrexone in the treatment of cancer: a systematic reviewhttps://www.researchgate.net/publication/384236060_Major_clinical_evidence_on_the_use_of_low-dose_naltrexone_in_the_treatment_of_cancer_a_systematic_reviewhttps://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/14737140.2022.2037426#abstract Learn more about your ad choices. COVID bounce back, based on PCR and LFT test datahttps://covid.joinzoe.com/data#levels-over-timeUploaded 03-09-21https://covid.joinzoe.com/post/covid-bounces-back-as-cases-start-to-riseBased on PCR and LFT test data7th to 21st August 2021Around one million weekly contributors25,876 recent swab testsSymptomatic cases in fully vaccinated (UK), 29.4% of the total new daily casesOur data shows post-vaccination infections are much more like a cold than the flu, with the top symptoms being runny nose, headache, sneezing, sore throat and loss of smell. We’re again calling on the government to add these cold-like symptoms to their list to help educate the public and catch more casesNew cases are highest in the 18-35 age groupsFollowed by the 0-18 year oldsPrevalenceOn average 1 in 100 people in the UK currently have symptomatic COVIDUK R value is 1.1 (Scotland, 1.2)Long covidEstimated that 870 cases a day will go on to experience symptoms for longer than 12 weeksProbability of long COVID is much lower than the previous waveProbability of contracting long COVID is much higher in younger peopleDriven by the fact that more young people are contracting COVID now compared to older generationsProfessor Tim SpectorUnfortunately, we’re back in a position where cases, hospitalisations and deaths are all going up and the UK has the highest rates of COVID in Europe, despite our superior vaccination rates. The main difference between the UK and Europe is our lack of restrictions. In many parts of Europe, people are still wearing face coverings and observing some social distancing. In the UK, where we eagerly declared ‘freedom’ from COVID and did away with even the most basic social measures, COVID has found an opportunity to spread. As kids head back to the classrooms, there’s a good chance cases will continue to rise from here.UK datahttps://coronavirus.data.gov.ukUnited States datahttps://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#trends_dailytrendscaseshttps://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#vaccination-trendshttps://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#hospitalizations Learn more about your ad choices.
