Alaric: The Gothic King Who Plundered Rome

BioGraphics - True Biographies & History's Most Fascinating PeopleFriday, October 30, 2026

Summary

The episode delves into the historical context surrounding the fall of Rome, focusing on the significant events leading to the sacking of the city by the Visigoths under King Alaric in 410 AD. It outlines the earlier conflict between the Roman Republic and the Gauls, which culminated in the sacking of Rome in 390 BC, and contrasts this with the later rise of the Roman Empire, which eventually fell into decline.

Alaric's ascent as a leader of the Visigoths is explored, detailing his military campaigns against the Romans and the political machinations that led to his rebellion. The narrative highlights key battles, such as the Battle of Adrianople, and the shifting alliances within the Roman Empire, particularly the power struggles involving figures like Emperor Theodosius and General Stilicho. The episode emphasizes Alaric's motivations, including his desire for a fair treaty with the Romans, which ultimately led to his decision to besiege Rome.

The final siege of Rome is recounted, illustrating the desperation of the Roman citizens as famine took hold. The negotiations between Alaric and the Roman Senate culminate in a significant agreement, but ultimately, Alaric's forces breach the city walls, leading to a three-day plunder. The episode concludes with Alaric's death shortly after the sack, marking a pivotal moment in history that foreshadowed the eventual collapse of the Western Roman Empire and the rise of new kingdoms in its place.
