The Book Everyone Avoids (And Why We’re Studying It)

Show Notes

In this solo episode, Mike Neglia shares the story behind Calvary Cork’s upcoming teaching series through the book of Revelation. Many Christians feel unsure about Revelation. Some avoid it because of the strange imagery and symbolism. Others associate it with fear, speculation, or complicated end-times charts. But Revelation was not given to confuse the church or frighten believers. It was given to reveal Jesus Christ and to encourage Christians living in uncertain times. In this episode, Mike explains why he believes now is the right time for our church to study this book together. He shares several unexpected moments that led him to this decision, including attending a conference where Revelation was taught in an encouraging way, discovering John Lennox’s work connecting Revelation to modern questions about technology and the future, and a conversation with a friend who admitted that the state of the world has left her anxious and unable to sleep. Those moments prompted an important realisation: Christians have a hope-filled worldview. Revelation reminds us that Jesus is ruling, history is not out of control, and the story of the world ends with the victory of Christ. Mike also explains the approach that will guide the series. Rather than getting lost in speculation or timelines, each chapter will be explored with one central question in mind: What does this chapter reveal about Jesus Christ? Listeners are encouraged to read ahead as the church journeys through the book together, approximately one chapter each week. Revelation is rich with symbolism and Old Testament imagery, but its central message is simple and powerful: Jesus wins. If you’ve ever felt intimidated by Revelation, this series is an invitation to rediscover it as a book of hope, worship, and confidence in Christ. What does the Bible say about the end of the world? Revelation 20 describes Satan’s final defeat, the thousand-year reign of Christ, and the last judgement—and asks a deeply personal question: are you ready to meet Jesus? In this sermon, Mike Neglia explores four movements in Revelation 20: Satan is bound, the saints reign, the devil is defeated, and the dead are judged. We consider what the millennium means, what happens at the Great White Throne, and why the Lamb’s Book of Life offers hope in the face of judgement. Whether you’re exploring Christianity in Cork, Ireland, asking questions about Jesus, or studying what the Bible teaches about the end times, this message invites you to consider both the seriousness of God’s judgement and the assurance of salvation through Jesus Christ. The One who will judge the world is the same One who gave His life to save sinners. Those who belong to Him can live faithfully and face the future with confidence. 📖 Bible passage: Revelation 20:1–15 🎙️ Preacher: Mike Neglia Questions explored: • What happens to Satan at the end of the world? • What is the thousand-year reign of Christ? • Will Christians face the final judgement? • What does the Bible teach about hell? • What is the Book of Life? • How can we be ready to meet Jesus? Revelation 19 brings us to one of the great climactic moments in the Bible: the marriage supper of the Lamb and the return of Jesus Christ as King of kings and Lord of lords. Heaven rejoices because God saves, God judges rightly, and God reigns. But this chapter also presses a personal question on every one of us: how will we respond to the rule of Jesus? The invitation is still open. Come to the Lamb. Trust the King. Do not miss the feast.

In Revelation 18, Babylon the Great falls. The city that promised security, luxury, power, and pleasure is exposed as empty, corrupt, and unable to save. This sermon traces Babylon from Babel, to empire, to symbol, to the final anti-God world system judged in Revelation. Along the way, we consider what it means for Christians to hear the call: “Come out of her, my people.” How do we live faithfully in the world without being formed by the world? How do we recognise the pull of false comfort, consumerism, compromise, and worldly sorrow? Revelation 18 is a heavy chapter, but it leads us to the hope of the gospel: Babylon buys people to use them, but Jesus redeems people for God by His blood. Babylon consumes, but Jesus saves. Babylon enslaves, but Jesus sets free. Babylon falls, but Christ remains. Text: Revelation 18 Series: Revelation Speaker: Mike Neglia Church: Calvary Cork

Revelation 17 is one of the most symbol-filled chapters in the Bible: a woman, a beast, many waters, seven heads, ten horns, a golden cup, and the name Babylon. But this chapter is not given merely to satisfy our curiosity about the future. It opens our eyes to the Babylon around us, warns our hearts against Babylon’s seduction, and fixes our hope on the Lamb who conquers. In this sermon, we consider Babylon as the anti-God world-system in every age: seductive, spiritual but Christless, violent, and doomed. And at the centre of it all stands Revelation 17:14: “They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings.” Babylon seduces. The beast destroys. But the Lamb conquers.

Revelation 16 is one of the most sobering chapters in the Bible. The seven bowls of God’s wrath are poured out upon a world that has ignored His warnings, worshipped the beast, persecuted the saints, clung to Babylon, and stubbornly refused to repent. In this sermon, we see that God’s judgment is righteous, human rebellion is deeply hardened, and Christ’s warning is urgent. The bowls show what sin deserves, but the gospel shows where the believer’s judgment has already fallen: at the cross of Jesus Christ.Revelation 16 warns us that rebellion against God has consequences, repentance is urgent, and Christ is our only refuge.Text: Revelation 16Series: RevelationPreacher: Mike NegliaCalvary CorkSundays at 11am25 South Side Industrial Estate, Cork, Ireland (T12 R792)Website: https://calvarycork.orgInstagram: @CalvaryCorkFacebook: /CalvaryCorkSuggested Tags / KeywordsRevelation 16, seven bowls, wrath of God, Lamb of God, book of Revelation, Calvary Cork, Mike Neglia, Revelation sermon, end times, Armageddon, judgment of God, repentance, Jesus Christ, Bible teaching, Christian sermon
