The Grid: Photography Podcast

Show Notes

It’s a Photoshop Q&A episode of The Grid, with Scott Kelby joined by KelbyOne producer Christina Sauer, plus a special studio audience joining the fun. Scott and Christina answer viewer questions while exploring some of Photoshop’s latest tools, including how Scott is using generative AI to tackle edits that once would have taken forever. He also takes a closer look at Find Distractions for automatically removing wires, graffiti, vehicles, and other clutter, and shares a simple non-destructive technique for bringing back anything the AI removes that you wanted to keep. Christina puts Find Distractions to the test with a great question that leads to a second cleanup pass, and they also tackle when to use Lightroom versus Photoshop, which AI features use generative credits, and why some of the tools photographers have relied on for years were already using AI long before we started calling it that.

It’s another “How Would I Edit Your Photo?” episode of The Grid, with Erik Kuna joined by Dobson Ayerule to edit viewer-submitted wildlife, street, landscape, memorial, and cityscape photos. Throughout the edits, Erik comes back to one important question: where do you want the viewer’s eye to go? From there, he demonstrates how cropping, Lightroom’s AI masking tools, white balance, vignettes, Dehaze, color grading, and selective adjustments can help strengthen the subject and tell a clearer story. Erik and Dobson also tackle blown highlights, distracting edges, flat light, and compositions that can’t quite be rescued in post, with a good reminder that sometimes the best editing decision actually needs to happen before you press the shutter.

It’s another Blind Photo Critique episode of The Grid, with Erik Kuna joined by Dan “Dano” Steinhardt to review everything from street photography, astrophotography, and wildlife to travel, sports, portraits, architecture, and more. Throughout the critiques, they come back to one of the most important parts of creating a strong image: controlling where the viewer’s eye goes. Erik and Dano share tips for eliminating distractions, working with light, cropping tighter, choosing better shooting angles, and finding the stronger “photo within the photo.” They also look at how timing, selective sharpening, dodging and burning, gradients, and vignettes can help strengthen an image, with a great live edit showing just how much a simple crop and vignette can change a composition.

It’s another Blind Photo Critique episode of The Grid, with Scott Kelby and Erik Kuna reviewing everything from landscapes, astrophotography, and portraits to wildlife, travel, street photography, and more. They share practical tips for improving composition, choosing the right time of day to shoot, and using cropping, masking, and gradients to direct the viewer’s eye. Scott also demonstrates several Lightroom and Photoshop techniques, including fixing washed-out images, working with Lightroom’s lesser-known masking tools, creating a golden-hour look with color adjustments, and using Generative Expand to rescue a composition that was shot too tight. One lesson keeps coming up throughout the critiques: know what your subject is, remove what competes with it, and make every part of the frame work toward the image you want to create.
