The Resurrection and the Life. Lazarus Comes Out.

"I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me, even if he dies, will live." — John 11:25

John 11 brings us into one of the most emotional moments in the Gospel. Lazarus is sick, and Jesus deliberately waits before going to Bethany. By the time He arrives, Lazarus has been dead four days. Martha tells Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother wouldn't have died." Her words carry both faith and grief. Jesus does not dismiss her pain. He meets her in it and declares, "I am the resurrection and the life." Then, when He sees Mary and the others weeping, Jesus weeps too. The One who knows resurrection is coming still enters fully into human sorrow. Then Jesus stands before the tomb and calls, "Lazarus, come out!" Death has no authority when the Author of life speaks. The miracle points beyond Lazarus to the greater victory Jesus Himself will soon accomplish through His own death and resurrection. Yet the chapter also shows how differently people respond to undeniable evidence. Some believe, while others begin plotting Jesus' death. John 11 reminds us that Jesus is not distant from our grief, and He is not powerless before death. He weeps with us, speaks life into what seems hopeless, and calls us to trust Him even when we cannot understand His timing.
