Most venture investors chase hot sectors or optics-driven impact, yet a 40-year dataset suggests the real edge lies in backing companies that solve fundamental problems. Chris Corbishley of Benevolent Capital explains why outcomes matter more than optics.

The conversation draws on research covering 14,000 venture-backed companies across 490 funds, which found that only 30% of companies addressed a real externality, and that this subset delivered 51% higher returns. Corbishley outlines five externalities that define a meaningful problem: financial services and access, healthcare, environment, security, and knowledge, which is evolving toward intelligence. He also argues that the AI market is overheated, with negative gross margins and weak customer cohorts hiding in the middle of the power law. Along the way, he shares how a concentrated, outbound-driven approach to sourcing, overcapitalizing founders, and bringing US funds into later rounds can turn European talent into global companies.
