THE PRODUCTION, ARRANGEMENTS, SCORING & FILM SCORES OF GEORGE MARTIN w/ Brian Kehew & Kevin Ryan

This week I am joined by the authors of two of the greatest books on music ever (George Martin: The Scores & Recording The Beatles, which received a 5-star review in MOJO): Brian Kehew & Kevin Ryan! They are also two incredible musicians, producers & engineers who have worked with The Who, Beck, Talking Heads, Fleetwood Mac, Fiona Apple & Air, to name just a few. In this episode, we focus on George Martin's incredible scoring & arrangements for The Beatles as well as his long journey in film scoring.

We discuss what drew them to work together after they initially found out they were writing competing books on The Beatles, gaining access to and the trust of The Beatles as well as Abbey Road & all of the people who had worked there, the feeling (and smell) of walking into Abbey Road studios, basketball court-shaped recording studios, why the Beatles were at one point running away from the "stodgy" atmosphere of Abbey Road, the legend of Magic Alex, what it was like to work with George Martin on a book about his scores, how many of his scores for The Beatles were written overnight, recreating the orchestral recording sessions at Abbey Road and telling the musicians they were playing it too well, playing the scores as if you've never heard these songs before, how it should be Martin-esque instead of Beatles-esque when it comes to emulating their sound, how researching Martin's orchestral score for Cheap Trick was a comedy of errors, what it's like performing their lectures at Abbey Road & around the world, the incredible tale of Martin's original full length score for Yellow Submarine that was not used & how Brian and Kevin were able to sync it up to the movie during their research, Martin's strange path through film scoring, the film he scored with Paul McCartney, his scores for George Harrison's Indian influenced songs, why Martin hid his real Cockney accent from the public, and more!!!

This week on Revolutions Per Movie, I had the pleasure of having three souls who not only have swirled in and around the world of the musical/film/performance collective, Elephant 6, but who were also principal in the finishing of the final The Olivia Tremor Control record, The Same Place, completed 27 years after the release of their last record.

My guest this week is comedian, actor & musician Jon Daly (Kroll Show, Fallout, Comedy Bang Bang, Curb Your Enthusiasm), who picked the skin-crawling, jaw-dropping documentary History Of The Eagles. We also discuss Jon's intersection between music and comedy, how his Red Hot Chili Peppers Super Bowl parody composition fooled the universe into thinking it was real, growing up in Pittsburgh, our uncles' record collections, living inside comedy records, Jon working on his comedy record with musical legends Mary Timony, Colleen Green & Nick Thorburn, the creation of Jon's epic Adult Swim Golf Classic (starring himself and Adam Scott), Linda Ronstadt, Glenn Frey's intense state of mind, are The Eagles the most humorless band of all time, why everyone loves Joe Walsh, Fleetwood Mac having the ultimate revenge on The Eagles, Flying Burrito Brothers & Poco, the hilarious story of UK producer Glyn Jones working with the band, how the band really believed they were rebels and outlaws, the underlying anger running through the band, David Geffen ripping them off, their solo careers and MTV domination, the Dead Kennedys Nazi Punk Fuck Off surprise visit in this doc, the third encore concept, the most disgusting Eagles lyric, and more!

Yes! It took a member of Mission of Burma to finally pick a Beatles film to discuss, three years into the podcast! Totally honored to have the person behind so much of my favorite sonic wizardry, Roger Clark Miller, on Revolutions Per Movie.
