Introducing MAMA: Motherhood, Alcohol, Mental Health and Anxiety
MAMA - Motherhood. Alcohol. Mental Health. AnxietyShow Notes
So… what is MAMA?
If you’ve ever found yourself pouring a glass of wine before you’ve even finished unpacking the school bags, if you’ve joked about Wine O’Clock while secretly wondering why your anxiety feels worse the next day, or if you’ve started asking yourself whether alcohol has quietly become part of your parenting journey, then you’ve found the right podcast.
MAMA stands for Motherhood, Alcohol, Mental Health and Anxiety. It’s an honest six part podcast series hosted by Victoria Vanstone, mum of three, author and host of the award-winning Sober Awkward podcast.
This teaser episode is a little introduction to why MAMA exists and why these conversations matter so much.
The full series launches next week alongside the Healthy Mum Healthy Bub program. The two have been designed to work together, giving you both practical support and honest conversation as you explore your own relationship with alcohol. You can work through the Healthy Mum Healthy Bub program while listening to each episode of MAMA, or simply enjoy the podcast on its own. However you choose to listen, you’ll find the same message running through both. You are not alone, you are not broken, and there are other ways to cope.
Created in collaboration with the Healthy Mum Healthy Bub team and researchers from the University of Sydney, and funded by the Medical Research Future Fund, MAMA brings together something really powerful, lived experience and evidence based research. You’ll hear real stories, practical tools, the latest science around alcohol, anxiety and motherhood, and plenty of laughs along the way.
This isn’t a podcast that tells you what to do. There are no labels, no judgement and no lectures. Instead, it’s an invitation to get curious. To ask yourself whether alcohol is helping you become the mum, partner and person you want to be. To understand why alcohol can feel so closely tied to motherhood, and to discover that there might be another way.
Whether you’re sober curious, trying to cut back, questioning your drinking, or simply interested in understanding the connection between motherhood, mental health and alcohol, MAMA is here to walk alongside you, one conversation at a time.
The teaser is here now, and the full six episode series, along with the Healthy Mum Healthy Bub program, launches next week. Pop the kettle on, settle in, and let’s start this conversation together.

More from MAMA - Motherhood. Alcohol. Mental Health. Anxiety
As we reach the final episode of MAMA, Victoria reflects on one of the most important lessons she has learned through motherhood, anxiety and eight years of sobriety:
When you change your relationship with alcohol, nobody really prepares you for the question that comes next:
There comes a point when you’ve read the articles, made the promises, created the rules and sworn that this time things will be different.
Every Friday night, Victoria Vanstone made the same promise to herself. Just one or two drinks. Home early. No hangover. No anxiety. No regrets. This time would be different.
Motherhood is hard. Not the cute Instagram version with matching outfits and homemade baby purées. The real version. The sleep deprivation, the self-doubt, the endless responsibility and the overwhelming feeling that everyone else somehow knows what they’re doing except you.
