Mystery of Sahara’s Star Dune Finally Cracked

Bright Side

Show Notes

Scientists have been puzzled for a long time about how a huge star-shaped sand dune in the Sahara Desert formed. This massive dune, called a "star dune," has arms that stretch out in different directions, unlike regular dunes that just move one way. After lots of research, scientists figured out that these dunes are shaped by winds blowing from multiple directions over time. The changing wind patterns cause the sand to build up in a star-like shape instead of forming a single ridge. It’s been a tough mystery to solve because the winds in the Sahara can be really tricky. But now that scientists have cracked it, they understand how these unique dunes are made!

Imagine a 1,300-ton boulder perched high on a cliff in Tonga, nearly 200 meters inland and 39 meters above sea level. Scientists say it might be the last trace of a mega-tsunami thousands of years ago while local legends claim it was hurled there by the mythical hero Maui. And that’s just the beginning. From a cursed ranch in America to strange spheres falling from the sky, from lost pyramids in the Amazon to monuments older than Stonehenge, this compilation uncovers the most mysterious discoveries that challenge what we know about history and the world around us. Each story is a window into the unknown where science, myth, and mystery collide. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Earth's history has seen some truly bizarre natural disasters. Take the Tunguska event in 1908, for example, where a massive explosion flattened 800 square miles of Siberian forest, likely caused by a meteor airburst. Then, there was a "Year Without a Summer" in 1816, caused by the eruption of Mount Tambora, which led to global cooling, crop failures, and food shortages. There were more weird disasters in the history of our planet that could be called weird - let's learn more about them. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The 1996 Everest disaster was one of the deadliest tragedies in mountaineering history. A sudden blizzard trapped climbers near the summit, leaving them stranded in freezing temperatures with little oxygen. Expedition leaders, including the famous Rob Hall and Scott Fischer, fought to save their teams but sadly didn’t make it back. Some climbers were miraculously rescued, while others were left behind in the brutal storm. The disaster raised serious questions about the dangers of commercial climbing on Everest. Even today, the story serves as a chilling reminder that nature always has the final word. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
