An “Endless” Cruise Has Left Resident Passengers Stranded In Cambodia

True Crime Reality

Summary

Over 200 passengers aboard the MV Odyssey, a cruise ship designed for long-term living, find themselves stranded in Cambodia after the company announced the abrupt suspension of operations due to skyrocketing fuel costs. Originally intended as a three-and-a-half-year journey, the voyage has been cut short by nearly 18 months, leaving residents without a home and scrambling for temporary accommodations.

The Florida-based company, Villavi Residences, marketed the Odyssey as a unique lifestyle choice, allowing individuals to live at sea while exploring various global destinations. However, rising fuel expenses, which surged from an average of $1,800 to between $6,000 and $8,000 per cabin per month, have rendered the operation unsustainable. In a desperate move, the company sought financial assistance from residents to cover operational costs, but ultimately issued eviction notices with only eight hours' notice.

Many passengers, some of whom sold their homes to finance their stay on the ship, are now left without a place to go. The company is reportedly evaluating restructuring options, but the future remains uncertain as they face potential bankruptcy. Residents are expressing frustration over the lack of support and clarity from Villavi, as they navigate this unexpected crisis in a foreign country.

Show Notes

A residential cruise ship sailing around the world only gave its passengers several hours notice to disembark the ship they called home and find another place to live. More than 200 people expected to live on the ‘Odyssey’ for at least another year and a half, many of whom sold their homes and invested hundreds of thousands of dollars to become permanent residents sailing around the world. The company announced it ran out of money for fuel because of rising oil prices due to the Iran war and had no other choice but to suspend operations. Villa Vie was one of a number of companies that marketed endless, around-the-world cruises, where passengers could live less expensively than on land. Now, those passengers are stranded in Cambodia, trying to figure out what to do next. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Utah officials have announced that DNA has connected serial killer Ted Bundy to the death of an Utah teenager more than 50 years after her naked body was discovered in the woods by a hunter. New technology has finally solved the 1974 brutal murder and sexual assault of 17-year-old Melissa Ann Smith. Smith is the second woman this year investigators have been able to tie to Bundy, who admitted to killing at least 30 women and girls across seven states in the 1970s. Bundy was executed in 1989 for the murders of two sorority sisters at Florida State University, but officials believe he is likely responsible for dozens of other missing women. There is renewed hope now that this new technology may lead to more answers for other victims’ families. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
